The bad thing about all the devil’s being here is that we’re surrounded by goddamned devils. The good thing about all the devil’s being here is that we have something to fight against, something to overcome. We have something to be stronger than, healthier than, more flexible than. We have a rigid fragility to shatter over our flexible antifragility. We have a cowardice to match our courage against. We have an excuse to “rage, rage, rage against the dying of the light!” In short: we have an enemy.

But the enemy isn’t people, necessarily. Get that out of your head. That kind of thinking is for outdated warmongers. No. This enemy is an abstraction of people. It’s an unhealthy disease that has taken root inside people. It’s a cancerous way of seeing the world that has made people blind to truth and open to deception.

The truth is that people are psychosocial sponges. They are easily manipulated. They are easy to trick. They are easy to convince. This is because most people don’t question things. They don’t question themselves. They don’t question their religions. They don’t question the law. They don’t question authority. They don’t question the government. They don’t question the “profoundly sick society” they grew up in.

And it’s precisely because they don’t question things that these tiny deceptions take root and eventually grow into giant devils that eat away at reasoning, twist logic, and leave people “convinced” of things that, when weighed against universal laws, simply are not healthy.

So, why don’t they question things? The simple answer is: fear. Most people are afraid of the answers they’ll come up with. What if the answers are scary? What if the answers prove that your job is immoral? What if the answers reveal that you’ve devoted your life to a folly? What if the answers expose your government for war crimes? What if the answers make you so uncomfortable that you must reevaluate your core values? What if the answers reveal that you never had healthy, authentic values to begin with? What if they were nothing more than hand-me-down, outdated nonsense reeking of parochial ignorance? What then?

The trick (after questioning everything) is to find something to fight for, not against. To find something worth defending. To find something worthy of your courage. To discover a healthy cause and then defend it. As William James said, “We are all ready to be savage in some cause. The difference between a good man and a bad one is the choice of the cause.”

So, we’ve come to a crossroads. Ask yourself: What’s a worthier cause? War or freedom? What’s healthier? Defending freedom or fighting a war? What’s more moral (or less immoral)? Killing someone in self-defense or killing someone because it was an order?

The key is not to be overreaching with your cause. Don’t be offensive with your cause, only defensive. In other words: don’t violently force your cause onto others, but also don’t allow others to violently force their cause onto you. Don’t be overreaching. Allow for freedom. Allow others to take your values into consideration and move on if they don’t consent. Don’t hinder the freedom of others because you think you know what’s best for them. Just be an example of what’s best, of what’s healthy, and hope that they choose healthy values over unhealthy ones.

If they get it, they won’t hinder your freedom. They won’t bludgeon you with their values, or overreach with their power, or force you to do things without your consent. If they don’t get it, then you’ll have to defend yourself against their tyranny. You’ll have to defend yourself against their overreach of power and their attempt at forcing you without your consent. As Gandhi controversially stated, “When there is only a choice between cowardice and violence, I would advise violence.”

Here’s the thing, down and dirty: If your values are based upon violence being the solution to problems, then your values are immoral and unhealthy. If your values are based upon hindering the freedom of others, then your values are immoral and unhealthy. If your values are based upon coercing people to give you money even if they haven’t consented, then your values are immoral and unhealthy. Bottom line: if your values are based upon violating the non-aggression principle, the golden rule, or the universal laws of healthy survival, then your values are immoral and unhealthy.

It really is that simple. What makes it complicated is cultural conditioning. What makes it complicated is people not questioning their petty indoctrinations: religion, politics, nationalism. What makes it complicated is that most people have been brainwashed into thinking that their shitty, unhealthy, nonaggression-principle-violating, golden-rule-violating, universal-law-violating values are good. What makes it complicated is fear.

The enemy of freedom is fear. It always has been. But it’s a particular flavor of fear that ignorantly consumes people. It’s the kind of fear that keeps people entrenched, that keeps them locked into tiny comfort zones and cowardly clinging to overreaching security measures. So perhaps the more precise phrase is this: the enemy of freedom is the fearful. Ask yourself: what’s scarier? Fear or the fearful?

It is fearful cowards clinging to comfort, security, and safety that make excuses for dropping bombs. It’s fearful cowards who choose fighting wars over defending freedom. It’s fearful cowards who think it’s more moral or less immoral to kill someone because it was an order over killing someone in self-defense. It’s fearful cowards who would rather be secure and comfortable but at war than insecure and uncomfortable defending freedom. It’s fearful cowards who think that state violence against free humans is a solution to problems. It’s fearful cowards who think it’s okay to hinder the freedom (immigration) of others. It’s fearful cowards who violate the non-aggression principle, the golden rule, and the universal laws of healthy survival.

So, here’s some healthy advice that doesn’t violate the nonaggression principle, the golden rule, or the universal laws that govern healthy survival: Moderate comfort and focus on courage. Moderate weaponry and focus on livingry. Moderate violence and focus on non-violent self-defense. Moderate security and focus on freedom. And, finally, moderate power over others and focus on cooperation. As Arundhati Roy profoundly stated, “the only thing worth globalizing is dissent.”

Millions of pounds are consumed annually, yet it may be more like a drug than a food and just as damaging and addictive as alcohol…

Fructose, which literally means “fruit sugar,”* sounds so sweet and innocent. And indeed, when incorporated into the diet in moderate amounts in the form of fruit – always organic and raw, when possible – it’s about as pure and wholesome as any biomolecule inseparably complexed with vitamins, fiber, plant stem cells, antioxidants, etc. i.e. as a whole food, can get.

Not so for industrially processed fructose in isolate form, which may be as addictive as alcohol,[i] and perhaps even morphine [ii] [iii]and which according to USDA research published in 2008 into major trends in U.S. food consumption patterns, 1970-2005, we now consume at the rate of at least 50 lbs a year — the ‘800 ounce gorilla’ in the room.[iv]

Our dietary exposure to fructose, of course, is primarily through either sugar (sucrose), which is a disaccharide comprised of 50% fructose and 50% glucose by weight, or through high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), which is mostly a 55% fructose and 45% glucose blend of monosaccharides, but goes as high as 90% fructose and 10% glucose in HFCS-90 form.  Pasteurized fruit juices are another concentrated source of fructose, but increasingly even pasteurized fruit juice is being adulterated with additional sugar or HFCS for reasons that have mostly to do with protecting the manufacturer’s bottom line.

Because high-fructose corn syrup contains free-form monosaccharides of fructose and glucose, it cannot be considered biologically equivalent to sucrose, which has a glycosidic bond that links the fructose and glucose together, and which slows its break down in the body. The attempt by the HFCS industry to re-label their product as “corn sugar,” which was recently denied by the FDA,[v] belies their anxiety about the differences, and also reveals growing awareness among the public of isolated fructose’s inherently toxic properties.

The reality is that fructose can cause far more damage than glucose, and we must look beyond caloric equivalences to understand this. While in times of need (e.g. starvation, post-workout glycogen depletion), fructose is as effective as glucose in replenishing glycogen stores, in “hypercaloric” states of excess

consumption, it can lead to a process known as glycation whereby a sugar binds with protein or lipid molecules, often resulting in damage to cells and tissues.

For example, in vitro studies show that fructose damages proteins seven times more rapidily than glucose through a process known as protein fructosylation, which is when a sugar undergoes a Maillard reaction with a protein, which basically results in the caramelization (browning) of blood and tissue contents, “gumming up the works.” For example, if you try baking a pastry made with fructose, instead of white sugar, it will brown much more rapidly as a result of this Maillard reactivity.

Fructose actually shares great resemblance to alcohol (ethanol), such as being capable of stimulating dopamine production in our brain, as well as sharing similar metabolic pathways and effects on the liver (e.g. fatty liver). Their great similarities make even more sense when you consider that fructose can easily be converted into ethanol with a pinch of yeast in order to make alcoholic beverages.

Like many foods consumed en masse, which may have a lesser known dark side (e.g. wheat), our global fixation on fructose may reveal something about it’s hitherto under appreciated addictive properties.

Fructose’s Drug-like Hold On Our Bodies

Fructose addiction and alcoholism, in fact, share a number of parallels. In an article titled, “Fructose: metabolic, hedonic, and societal parallels with ethanol,” published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association in 2010, Robert H. Lustig, MD broke new ground by identifying the great similarities between these two substances:

“Rates of fructose consumption continue to rise nationwide and have been linked to rising rates of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. Because obesity has been equated with addiction, and because of their evolutionary commonalities, we chose to examine the metabolic, hedonic, and societal similarities between fructose and its fermentation byproduct ethanol. Elucidation of fructose metabolism in liver and fructose action in brain demonstrate three parallelisms with ethanol. First, hepatic fructose metabolism is similar to ethanol, as they both serve as substrates for de novo lipogenesis, and in the process both promote hepatic insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and hepatic steatosis. Second, fructosylation of proteins with resultant superoxide formation can result in hepatic inflammation similar to acetaldehyde, an intermediary metabolite of ethanol. Lastly, by stimulating the “hedonic pathway” of the brain both directly and indirectly, fructose creates habituation, and possibly dependence; also paralleling ethanol. Thus, fructose induces alterations in both hepatic metabolism and central nervous system energy signaling, leading to a “vicious cycle” of excessive consumption and disease consistent with metabolic syndrome. On a societal level, the treatment of fructose as a commodity exhibits market similarities to ethanol. Analogous to ethanol, societal efforts to reduce fructose consumption will likely be necessary to combat the obesity epidemic.” [emphasis added]

While the parallel between fructose and alcohol consumption may seem strange, the intimate connection between what we eat and our psychological health is beginning to gain wider recognition, especially considering new research linking aggression to trans fatty acid consumption, episodes of acute wheat mania, and the widespread presence of opiates in common foods.

It may come as a surprise to many, but there is a fructose-opiate infatuation deeply embedded within mammalian biology, which has been the subject of scientific investigation since the late 80’s. A study published in the European Journal of Pharmacology in 1988 found that both glucose and fructose were capable of antagonizing morphine-induced pain killing effects, likely due to the direct opioid effects of these sugars or their metabolic byproducts on the central nervous system. In fact, the researchers found that fructose was more potent than glucose in accomplishing these effects.

Ultimately, avoiding fructose in any other than its naturally embedded form in the intelligent and infinitely complex structures of food, e.g. fruit, is ideal. Food cravings for sweets, after all, may conceal unmet emotional or spiritual needs, so sometimes it is best to search deeper within for the answers. Or, using natural non- or low-calorie sweeteners like xylitol or stevia may also take the edge off an intense sweet tooth.

But, beyond the increasingly obvious adverse effects of isolated fructose to human health, is the “hidden” damage that fructose does to environmental/planetary health. This is because fructose from HFCS is invariably produced from genetically modified (GM) corn, which requires massive environmental inputs of harmful pesticides, glyphosate, gene products with the ability to transfer horizontally, and other unsustainable practices. The “hidden tax” of fructose consumption is the accelerating, GM-mediated destruction of the biosphere; a biosphere, mind you, without which human health and human existence, is not possible.

In March of 2018, the U.S. national debt topped $21 trillion dollars, and now the average debt liability for an individual taxpayer is projected to be $161,022 by 2019. This means that every American taxpayer pretty much owes the government a house, when you consider that the median house price is around $200,000.

That’s right, even your happy, bubbly one-year-old future taxpayer, who is too new to the planet to have any idea what any of this means, will owe someone else a house by the time she’s old enough to get a job.

At present, even though the government is collecting record high individual income taxes, the debt continues to rise, as do taxes, fees, permits, regulations, and government sponsored extortion of citizens. This doesn’t bode well for the average American.

“With the debt per taxpayer as high as it is, if the government continues to raise taxes on middle income earners and above, it will become increasingly difficult for many of these individuals to preserve their standard of living. This will result in a reduction of wealth that spans the entire income spectrum, excluding perhaps the super-rich.” [Source]

Remarkably, at the same time the debt hit $21 trillion, others were noticing that the publicly available number of unaccounted for, or lost or stolen, taxpayer dollars is also now at $21 trillion. Most of this seems to have gone missing from the Pentagon.



Forbes magazine published an article on this in December of 2017, noting how year after year the defense department’s annual financial reports include insane sums of money that goes unaccounted for in the form of unsubstantiated adjustments. That is, faulty reporting, something which would land an ordinary person in jail for tax evasion.

“..data used to prepare the year-­end financial statements were unreliable and lacked an adequate audit trail. The report indicates that just 170 transactions accounted for $2.1 trillion in year—end unsupported adjustments.  No information is given about these 170 transactions.  In addition many thousands of transactions with unsubstantiated adjustments  were, according to the report, removed by the Army. There is no explanation concerning why they were removed nor their magnitude.” [Source]

Former U.S. Congressman Ron Paul recently posted about the missing money phenomenon, noting that most of this astronomical amount of money is the result of out of control military spending.

Looking at this situation in layman’s terms, there’s a criminal on the block, one that everyone knows but is afraid to confront, who steals from everyone in the neighborhood again and again. And it’s gotten to the point where the criminal is free to act with impunity, stealing ever greater amounts from his neighbors.

There is no one who can help. The police won’t do anything because they are paid off by the criminal. The criminal is well-armed because he doesn’t follow the same gun laws that the neighbors have to adhere to. He regularly flaunts his weapons and threatens anyone who looks at him wrong.

There is nothing the neighbors can do about it, and the criminal knows this and becomes more and more brazen as time goes by. And the criminal lives a life of luxury and ease, while the neighbors have to work harder and harder to recover from their ever-increasing losses.


The neighborhood has become a sort of feudal preying ground for the criminal, and the neighbor’s futures look more and more bleak with each passing year. They have become, in effect, slave workers for the criminal, and the situation holds no promise of improving any time soon.

While the neighbors are all honest, good, hard-working people, desperation is slowly sinking in and in time the situation will become volatile and very dangerous.

Final Thoughts

In other news, the IRS has recently been granted the power to withhold passports from citizens who owe back taxes in the amount of $50,000 or more. This could be some 362,000 people, according to Time magazine, who face the prospect of internal imprisonment for doing something the government itself does, but at a tiny fraction of the scope.

“The State Department says that violators who do not resolve their tax issues before applying for a passport will have their application delayed or denied. Meanwhile, people with seriously delinquent tax payments who have already applied for a new U.S. passport will not have a new passport issued to them until they have resolved their tax issues with the IRS.” [Source]

This is something that doesn’t seem to register on the public mind, and as long as Americans are more interested in allowing themselves to be divided and conquered by the media, we can only expect for the national debt crime to exacerbate.

It is of the first order of importance to remember this: “the system cannot be fixed by the system.” It can only be fixed by the resistance of healthy, reasonable, imaginative, knowledgeable, compassionate and non-violent individuals. It can only be fixed by people who have re-conditioned their cultural conditioning, un-matrixed the Matrix, ninjaneered their statist indoctrination, and unwashed their political brainwash.

All of this despite uncomfortable cognitive dissonance, myopic tribal affiliation, and blind nationalism.

In short: the system can only be fixed by people who have dared to take a leap of courage outside the box of the system itself, and then double-dogged dared themselves to gain knowledge that undermines the unhealthy system while proactively building a healthier system.

1.) The expansion of imperial war undermines freedom:

“At the end of the cold war we could have diverted tax dollars to the quality of our lives, things like health care, education, infrastructure, eliminating poverty, and protecting against climate change. Alas, the peace dividend never happened. Why not? Because the military, and persons profiting from the military, like weapons manufacturers and their lobbyists in Congress didn’t want to. That’s why. Only 8 percent of Americans polled in 2014 wanted the United States to lead the world military. But that 8 percent won out. That’s plutocracy.” ~Ted Stanford, WWII Navy Veteran

If slavery is the opposite of freedom, then war is probably its inverse. It’s simple: human beings cannot be free when other human beings are threatening them with guns and bombs.

To the extent that guns and bombs are necessary is only in a defense-minded sense. Otherwise, the use of guns and bombs is just cold, calculated, murderous and offensive, war. It is only necessary if the Non-aggression principle has been violated and the loss of human life is at stake. Then, and only in a defensive sense, is the use of bombs and guns necessary.

The problem with war today is that it is not defense-minded but offense-minded. It is built upon an imperialist agenda and a money-making war machine that’s bolstered by a fight against phantom-terrorism that cannot be won. It seeks power and the control of natural resources, usually at the expense of innocent lives. In short: it is offensive and overreaching and not conducive to healthy and free human beings.

2.) The bloated military budget undermines freedom:

The main reason the war machine is so offensive and overreaching is because of the bloated military budget. Exacerbated by war-profiteering companies like Lockheed Martin and Raytheon, the U.S. military is larger than the next seven militaries in the world, combined!

Let that sink in. World military spending totaled more than $1.6 trillion in 2015. The U.S. accounted for 37 percent of that total. If that’s not a bloated military, I don’t know what is. It’s time to scale back. It’s time to see the military industrial complex for what it really is: a terrorist generating war machine propped up by profiting weapons manufacturers.

The propaganda machine that the military industrial complex uses to convince its citizens that it needs more money is based on myopic nationalistic pride that imagines the money is going to our brave military men and women. Nothing could be further from the truth. It goes toward $200 million B-52 bombers and faulty F-35 fighter jets costing $400 billion each. Each! That is the height of insanity. Just imagine what use that money could go towards.

And yet we all just go about our day imagining that the government knows best. Meanwhile, our education system falters, our health care is being eroded, and our infrastructure crumbles. We can no longer see the error of our ways. As Noam Chomsky said, “The general population doesn’t know what’s happening, and it doesn’t even know that it doesn’t know.”And here we are, not even caring that we don’t know.

3.) The continual bailing out of Big Banks undermines freedom:

“The federal rescue of Wall Street didn’t fix the economy – it created a permanent bailout state based on a Ponzi-like confidence scheme. And the worst may be yet to come.” ~Matt Taibbi

Bailing out Wall Street was the ultimate bait-and-switch. It turns out that we’ve all been bamboozled. This mafia-esc, multi-layered, lie-upon-lie shit-cake goes so deep that it fooled congress twice into eating it –hook, line, and sinker. This article goes into detail about it.

The biggest problem with the bail out, other than that it has further entrenched the Too Big to Fail banking system, is that it has made lying on behalf of the most corrupt banks the official policy of the United States government.

This undermines freedom because it not only allows power to become absolute, it allows power to corrupt absolutely. There must be checks and balances on power. Especially power over people’s lives. Unchecked power tends to become tyrannical power. Tyrannical power tends to become evil. Failed systems should be allowed to fail lest failure be confused with success in some Orwellian double-spoken way.

4.) Overreaching offense-minded policing undermines freedom:

“The law is an opinion with a gun.” ~Stefan Molyneux

Healthy policing is an extension of healthy self-defense. Self-defense turned violent and overreaching is no longer about self-preservation. Similarly, policing turned violent and overreaching is no longer about protecting and serving. Violence should only ever be used in self-defense and never as a means toward enforcing one’s values, rules, or laws onto others, no matter how popular they are.

Defense-minded policing must remain a core philosophy if a police force intends to be a moral institution. The solution is not more ill-trained offense-minded police with too much power, but more well-trained defense-minded police with just enough power (a power with built-in checks and balances in place to prevent power from corrupting). In short: a complete eradication of the Thin Blue Line is in order.

The bottom line is that no single person should have as much power as a cop has. Nobody should be allowed to be judge jury and executioner in the street. To the extent that a defense-minded cop has power, it should be checked and balanced by the people who pay for the policing, first, and by other defense-minded cops, second. And all cops should be held to a higher standard precisely because of the immense power that they wield.

Until we can achieve a level of civilization where we have all evolved to a point where voluntarism and the non-aggression principle are second nature, the best alternative is defense-minded policing that doesn’t offensively overreach its power by shoving its gun down everyone’s throat.

5.) The corrupt electoral system undermines freedom:

“If you vote, you have no right to complain.” ~George Carlin

The electoral process has cemented into place a system of legalized bribery. Elections have become auctions. They are ridiculously overrated and flawed to begin with. They attract power-hungry egomaniacs at best and warmongering sociopaths at worst. It’s time to usher in a new system of appointing leaders.

The problem is our choices are limited due to bi-partisan claptrap. Our decision seems to be “vote” or “not vote” which is influenced by state manipulation, cultural conditioning, and entrenched political propaganda with corrupt lobbying that creates divisiveness.

But there is a third option. We can “elect” to think outside the ballot box. We can “elect” to take money out of politics. We can “elect” to have a complete electoral system reboot. We can “elect” to implement a sortition system that lotteries-in leaders from an assembly of authentic leaders and prestigious elders and votes-out bad leaders. We can “elect” to devise a system that uses impeachment more often than it uses aggrandizement.

Indeed. We can “elect” to not elect a president at all, because we don’t need a scapegoat-puppet who is hamstrung by lobbyists, corporations, and bankers for a “leader.” We just need authentic leaders and prestigious elders –plural; chosen randomly from a competitive assembly of other authentic leaders and prestigious elders. That will get the job done just fine, while also preventing scapegoating and the rise of psychopaths.

6.) Despotic leadership undermines freedom:

The control of information is something the elite always does, particularly in a despotic form of government. Information, knowledge, is power. If you can control information, you can control people.” ~Tom Clancy

The chain of command. The chain of obedience. Allegiance to authoritative hierarchies. Top-down leadership. These forms of “leadership” have utterly failed us as a species. They have only ever led to unhealthy rigid order – creating robots, pawns, and sheep; which has only ever led to unnecessary wars waged between robots, pawns, and sheep who never had the courage to question authority. As Mark Passio surmised, “Order followers are the people who keep the system of slavery in place.”

The chain of command isn’t even leadership. It is despotic followership. It’s grossly outdated. They don’t train followers how to become leaders, they train followers how to remain followers through rank and file. A true leader must break rank at some point in order to become such, otherwise he/she is only a “leader” by authoritarian dictate, or according to some myopic and vacuous rank.

True leaders cannot be controlled; they learn, through self-mastery, through the teachings of other leaders, from Pain and Nature, how to discipline themselves. True leaders don’t follow power; they learn how to turn the tables on power, even their own, so that power does not corrupt.

True leaders don’t kowtow to tyranny or authoritarian rule; they attempt to dismantle it, despite the “rank and order” that props it up. Therefore, a true leader is a bottom-up leader who has the courage and the wherewithal to question the despotic top-down chain of obedience.

Strict obedience to authority at the expense of personal freedom must be thwarted. This requires courageous bottom-up leaders to throw a wrench into the machinery of the so-called “chain of command.”

7.) Hoarding and shortsighted distribution undermines freedom:

“The problem with the Western world is surplus production. We’re in surplus production in almost every area. But there is a terrible distribution system where people around the globe suffer and die from starvation. This is a distribution problem, not a production problem.”~John Ralston Saul

Extreme poverty and starvation are avoidable in this age of extreme surplus. The utter failure of our distribution system undermines freedom. It prevents people from thriving because they are expending all their vital energy on merely surviving.

If, as Harry Frankfurt said, “From the point of view of morality, it is not important that everyone should have the same. What is morally important is that each should have enough,” then it behooves us, as both reasonable and moral human beings, to make sure that we each have enough by fixing the corrupt system of distribution.

The deeper psychological problem is that we believe that our sense of worth is wrapped up in how skilled we are at something, because we were raised and conditioned in a culture that values competition over cooperation. This creates ego-centric specialists concerned only with narrow-minded one-upmanship over open-minded compassion.

But we are social creatures, first and foremost. We need each other to survive. Competition has always been secondary to cooperation; otherwise we wouldn’t have survived as a species (Darwin).

So, our worth is actually wrapped up in how much we care for each other. The problem is that we’ve had the cart (competition) in front of the horse (compassion) for too long. It’s time we got the horse back in front of the cart. This will be an arduously Herculean task, considering our cultural conditioning. But it is very important, for the survival of our species, that we get it right.

8.) Statism itself undermines freedom:

How do you know if you are a statist? You are a statist if you believe that you need a ruler to rule over you, if you believe that you require permission to be free, if you blindly worship a flag, and if you believe that violence is the answer to solving problems.

As it stands, the USA lives in an oligarchic state disguised as a democratic republic. Since a massive amount of wealth is concentrated in the hands of a few, we’re unable to maintain a healthy horizontal democracy. Instead, we’re forced to deal with the snake of an unhealthy vertical democracy which has the diabolical snakehead of oligarchic plutocracy.

If we lived within a horizontal democracy, we would have a better chance at being free. No masters, no rulers, and no chance for power to become concentrated in the hands of a few. As Edward Abbey said, “Since few men are wise enough to rule themselves, even fewer are wise enough to rule others.” Easier said than done, sure, but as Spinoza said, “All things excellent are as difficult as they are rare.”

When it comes down to it, it’s impossible to live freely within a plutocratic state. The plutocrats will simply continue buying up power by creating oppressive laws and “legal”extortion rackets that keep the people without wealth and power in a permanent state of poverty and powerlessness. Add to that the use of lobbyists and a fiat currency based on debt, and you have a nation of hoodwinked debt slaves (soft slavery) under the delusion that they live in a free democratic republic.

It’s time to decide upon the only choice that really matters: Free human, or indoctrinated statist; uncomfortable freedom, or comfortable slavery. The choice is yours.

And if the overreaching state should continue to use violence against us, then we plant our heels deep into the ground, we lay our shields low, and we declare to the Powers That Be, as Henry David Thoreau did: “I was not designed to be forced. I will breathe after my own fashion. Let us see who is the strongest.”

Glyphosate, the world’s most popular herbicide, is at the center of international scrutiny after a San Francisco court on Friday decided in favor of a California school groundskeeper with terminal cancer.

The jury ruled that the plaintiff, Dewayne “Lee” Johnson, developed cancer from repeated exposure to RoundupMonsanto‘s widely used glyphosate-based weedkiller, and ordered the company to pay $289 million in damages.

The landmark jury ruling, which could open the door for roughly 4,000 similar U.S. lawsuits against Monsanto, sparked outcry around the world.


Germany’s Bayer, which purchased Monsanto this year for $63 billion, also purchased a potential mountain of legal costs. Shareholders are certainly spooked. Bayer’s stock tumbled as much as 14 percent on Monday, losing about 12 billion euros ($14 billion) in market value, Reuters reported.

Bayer defended the safety of glyphosate and said it would appeal the verdict. “The jury’s verdict is at odds with the weight of scientific evidence, decades of real world experience and the conclusions of regulators around the world that all confirm glyphosate is safe and does not cause non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma,” the company said in a statement to Reuters.

Glyphosate, the most-used herbicide in the European Union, has been the subject of fierce debate in Europe for years. Last year, the European Commission extended its license for five years, but the ruling in San Francisco has reinvigorated calls for a ban.

“We must fight the invasion of this substance in our market, a threat that exists due to monstrous commercial agreements signed only in the name of profit,” Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister Luigi Di Maio wrote on Facebookover the weekend.

France’s Environment Minister Nicolas Hulot described the verdict as the “beginning of a war” against glyphosate in Europe. “If we wait, such poisons will not be prevented from doing their damage and the victims will be excessively numerous,” he said to BFM radio.

Italy and France are moving towards a phase-out of the chemical. Germany aims to end use of glyphosate in this legislative period, which ends in three years, Reuters reported. In April, German Agriculture Minister Julia Kloeckner announced she was drafting rules to stop use of glyphosate in the country’s home gardens, parks and sports facilities.


Activists told Times of India on Monday that Friday’s verdict in California should prompt a nationwide ban.

“Our organization has already filed a petition with the ministry of agriculture with thousands of signatures seeking the ban on glyphosate. However the government has not taken any action so far,” Kathiva Kuruganti of Alliance for Sustainable and Holistic Agriculture told the publication.

Glyphosate is widely used on herbicide-tolerant cotton in India. In May, India’s Supreme Court refused to stay the Delhi High Court’s ruling that Monsanto cannot claim patents for Bollgard and Bollgard II, its genetically modified cotton seeds, in the country. Monsanto first introduced its GM-technology in India in 1995. Today, more than 90 percent of the country’s cotton crop is genetically modified.


On the heels of the ruling in California, Greenpeace is urging the Australian government to restrict sales of Monsanto’s weedkillers, which is sold in shops across the country.

“Use of this dangerous product should be severely restricted,” Jamie Hanson, Greenpeace’s head of campaigns, told Guardian Australia.”

Hanson added, “Roundup is widely available for sale in Australia … potentially exposing millions of people to its harmful effects. This case is only the first of hundreds that have been filed in the U.S. claiming Roundup causes non-Hodgkin lymphoma. We have no idea how far this will spread and how many more are to come.”

Shares of Australia’s Nufarm, which contains glyphosate, fell 17 percent Monday after the cancer finding in California, Reuters reported.

“The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and regulatory authorities around the world, including Australia, support the fact that glyphosate does not cause cancer,” spokeswoman for Monsanto in Australia told Guardian Australia.

The big tech companies are now openly censoring popular viewpoints and deleting select social media pages who supposedly ‘violate community guidelines.’

There is, of course, never a detailed explanation of why companies like You Tube and Facebook delete user generated pages (our You Tube page was deleted in 2017 for no apparent reason and our Facebook page has been throttled down to almost no reach), and there is never a reasonable way to appeal for the reinstitution of these pages.

The end result of this type of censorship, however, quite likely will not bring about the feared Soviet style clampdown on ideas that challenge the establishment. It’s more reasonable to expect that these companies have fallen pray to monopolistic hubris and will soon see massive declines in viewership, collapsing stock prices and the revolt of angry shareholders. In other words, these companies are shooting themselves in the feet.

That said, the current social/political/media climate in America today is likely to bring about the rise of a far more insidious and dangerous type of censorship: self-censorship.

The Cambridge dictionary defines self-censorship as:

“control of what you say or do in order to avoid annoying or offending others, but without being told officially that such control is necessary:”

Wikipedia defines it as:

“Self-censorship is the act of censoring or classifying one’s own discourse. This is done out of fear of, or deference to, the sensibilities or preferences (actual or perceived) of others and without overt pressure from any specific party or institution of authority.” ~Wikipedia

In other words, self-censorship is voluntarily silencing one’s self out of fear of inoffical reprisal. That reprisal can come in many forms, soft and hard, but at it’s most fundamental level it involves the fear of what others will think of you or say to you if they don’t like what they hear.

This form of censorship is already taking hold and is the result of the fear that individuals have of upsetting the mobs and virtue signaling hordes of self-righteous personalities. It is the fear that anything you say can and will be used against you in the court of public opinion and political correctness. That just by voicing your opinion on something you risk being attacked by black clad and megaphone wielding tyrants, physically removed from restaurants or harassed when conducting the ordinary affairs of life.

George Orwell wrote extensively of self-censorship at the conclusion of world war II. When he sought to publish his classic book Animal Farm, which he wrote during the war as a metaphorical critique of Soviet society, he was rejected by a number of publishers who were afraid to offend the prevailing sentiment of the time that the USSR should not be criticized for fear of instigating a diplomatic rift with the UK.

Publishers and editors were not ordered by law not to criticize the USSR, but they did so as not to offend the political establishment and popular sentiment. To this, Orwell penned an introduction to Animal Farm explaining the effects of self-censorship on a free society.

Entitled, ‘The Freedom of the Press,’ Orwell’s short letter aptly describes the situation we are faced with today.

“…the chief danger to freedom of thought and speech at this moment is not the direct interference of the MOI or any official body. If publishers and editors exert themselves to keep certain topics out of print, it is not because they are frightened of prosecution but because they are frightened of public opinion. In this country intellectual cowardice is the worst enemy a writer or journalist has to face, and that fact does not seem to me to have had the discussion it deserves.” ~George Orwell

Orwell continues in his critique:

“Unpopular ideas can be silenced, and inconvenient facts kept dark, without the need for any official ban. Anyone who has lived long in a foreign country will know of instances of sensational items of news — things which on their own merits would get the big headlines — being kept right out of the British press, not because the Government intervened but because of a general tacit agreement that “it wouldn’t do” to mention that particular fact. So far as the daily newspapers go, this is easy to understand. The British press is extremely centralized, and most of it is owned by wealthy men who have every motive to be dishonest on certain important topics. But the same kind of veiled censorship also operates in books and periodicals, as well as in plays, films and radio. At any given moment there is an orthodoxy, a body of ideas which it is assumed that all right-thinking people will accept without question. It is not exactly forbidden to say this, that or the other, but it is “not done” to say it, just as in mid-Victorian times it was “not done” to mention trousers in the presence of a lady. Anyone who challenges the prevailing orthodoxy finds himself silenced with surprising effectiveness. A genuinely unfashionable opinion is almost never given a fair hearing, either in the popular press or in the highbrow periodicals.” ~George Orwell

In this dynamic, the influences of peer pressure and commercial pressures do more to silence dissent than any official decree of censorship could possibly accomplish.

When speaking on the importance of press freedom, American writer E.B. White spoke of the cultural importance of having many independent viewpoints and fearless news organizations professing a wide range of ideas.

“The press in our free country is reliable and useful not because of its good character but because of its great diversity. As long as there are many owners, each pursuing his own brand of truth, we the people have the opportunity to arrive at the truth and to dwell in the light. The multiplicity of ownership is crucial. It’s only when there are a few owners, or, as in a government-controlled press, one owner, that the truth becomes elusive and the light fails. For a citizen in our free society, it is an enormous privilege and a wonderful protection to have access to hundreds of periodicals, each peddling its own belief. There is safety in numbers: the papers expose each other’s follies and peccadillos, correct each other’s mistakes, and cancel out each other’s biases. The reader is free to range around in the whole editorial bouillabaisse and explore it for the one clam that matters—the truth.”  ~E. B. White

Final Thoughts

Media censorship is a shift in the flow of information, while self-censorship is a shift in consciousness. It is the dangerous cornerstone of group-think.

We haven’t reached that point yet, not by a long shot, as is evident in the fact that both sides of the political spectrum are 100% engaged in bickering with the other side. But as social discourse continues to digress and corporations and other institutions feel more empowered to compel their employees and clients to unofficially comply with one political view or another, self-censorship will come creeping more so into our culture.

The explosion of interest in the medical benefits of cannabidiol (CBD) have followed the greater acceptance of cannabis and hemp. While the CBD industry grows at record pace, a vast amount of research is being conducted to identify the explicit health benefits of CBD.

Not commonly known is that CBD’s are actually found in other plants and foods as well, leading to the possibility of medical grade CBD being available to those in areas where CBD products derived from hemp and cannabis are still outlawed.

Researchers working for a San Francisco company, Peak Health Foundation, have recently discovered a new source of CBD not derived from cannabis or hemp, opening the door to more options for the development of CBD based tinctures and medicines. The plant is a variety of humulus, commonly known as hops, a grain commonly used in the production of beer and other alcoholic products, has been found to contain high levels of CBD’s.

“A San Francisco company, Peak Health Foundation, recently announced its first CBD product derived from a strain of humulus, more commonly known as hops. Not the ones used to make beer, but a strain discovered in India that contains no THC but high levels of CBD and is not derived from a plant that remains illegal.


Once a variety of hops was found in the wild with a reasonably high CBD content, Peak Health founder Bomi Joseph cross-bred the plants to create a new variety known as Kriya brand humulus. Joseph has patented the plant, which has a CBD concentration of around 18%.” [Source]

For those who’ve for years been fighting Monsanto, affectionately known as the world’s most evil corporation, a San Francisco jury’s decision last Friday to fine the company $289 million is earth-shattering news. Apparently financial markets and analysts agree.

In the case of Dwayne Johnson vs. Monsanto, the plaintiff was awarded an enormous amount of money after contracting non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). The jury decided that Johnson’s cancer was most likely the result of exposure to Monsanto’s Roundup and Ranger herbicide products, which Johnson routinely applied as a school groundskeeper.

In addition to the charge that Monsanto’s products were the source of Johnson’s NHL, the jury also found the agrochemical and seed giant guilty of covering up the potential harm of these products and of failing to adequately warn consumers of the known and suspected risks. In other words, Monsanto has been lying about the safety of their most popular products. 

Now, it remains to be seen just how this will affect the company’s operations. In June of this year, the pharmaceutical giant Bayer finalized its acquisition of Monsanto, much to the dismay of many who’d like to see both of these companies held responsible for harmful business practices that amount to poisoning people and the earth for profit.

The Johnson verdict comes at a rather inopportune time for Bayer who is already having to work to convince consumers that the merger is good business. Over the weekend, the financial markets responded to the historical fine, and Bayer’s stock price dropped a whopping 10%, and it remains to be seen just how this will continue to evolve during this week’s trading period.

“Bayer shares were down 11.2 percent at 82.93 euros at 1320 GMT, the worst performing stock on the Stoxx Europe 600 index , and on track to close at their lowest in almost five years.

Could it be that large retailers of agricultural and gardening products, such as Home Depot and Lowe’s, will spearhead the effort to remove these products from its shelves in order to better serve their customer bases? The Johnson case certainly sets the precedent for such a dramatic turn against Monsanto, and it sure would be a positive development in the struggle against the toxic legacy of Monsanto.

This, however, is of little benefit to Johnson, whom doctors say is expected to die from NHL within the coming months. And this is also little benefit to the school children and staff who work and learn at a property that is routinely doused with a now known carcinogen. Furthermore, this massive financial verdict does little for the millions, perhaps even billions of other people around the world who are at risk from exposure to Monsanto’s most dangerous products.

Glyphosate, the primary, active and carcinogenic ingredient in Roundup and Ranger has been under fire for years over concern of the negative health effects of exposure to it.

University of Toledo researchers made a shocking discovery that the “blue light” emanating from our smartphones and other screens is literally doing permanent damage to our vision.

WTOL reports:

A dark room at the University of Toledo is where researchers have found blue light, specifically, leads to macular degeneration.


“Macular Degeneration is one of the leading causes of blindness in the United States and all around the world,” said assistant professor in the UT Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Ajith Karunarathne.

That’s right.


According to this new research, blue light can makes us blind.


The researchers said molecules that we need to be able to see, called retinal, turn into cell killers when they interact with blue light.


“We don’t really at this point know what is the major cause. We know how it happened because there are multiple paths that lead to the cell death,” said Karunarathne.


The researchers want to get to the bottom of that and develop some sort of eye drop to reduce damage. In the meantime, they suggest avoiding looking at your phone in the dark.

Scientists knew that blue light could damage retinas – they just didn’t know how or why.

They suggest not using smartphones and other screens in the dark.

In an incredible victory for plaintiff Dwayne Johnson, a San Francisco jury just found agrochemical and seed giant Monsanto guilty of failing to adequately warn that it’s products Roundup and Ranger may cause cancer when used in a reasonable and expectable manner.

From 2012 to 2015 Johnson was a school groundskeeper for the Benicia unified school district in California where he regularly applied Monsanto’s herbicide Roundup to the property. In 2014 he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), and claimed that Monsanto knowingly hid the carcinogenic effects of the product from consumers.

“Johnson said he took meticulous care at work, following product label instructions and wearing protective gear while spraying weed-killer. There is nothing on Roundup or RangerPro labels warning of a , something that the lawsuit charges was so negligent it amounted to Monsanto putting profit over people’s health.


Johnson twice was drenched with RangerPro when spraying gear malfunctioned. Attorney Brent Wisner argued in court that chemicals in the mix enabled glyphosate to penetrate Johnson’s protective suit and soak his skin, causing or exacerbating the cancer.” [Source]

In May of 2018, The Guardian reported on the case, noting:

“The lawsuits challenge Monsanto’s position that its herbicides are proven safe and assert that the company has known about the dangers and hidden them from regulators and the public. The litigants cite an assortment of research studies indicating that the active ingredient in Monsanto’s herbicides, a chemical called glyphosate, can lead to NHL and other ailments. They also cite research showing glyphosate formulations in its commercial-end products are more toxic than glyphosate alone. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified glyphosate as a probable human carcinogen in 2015.


…He was healthy and active before he got the cancer diagnosis in August 2014. In a January deposition, Johnson’s treating physician testified that more than 80% of his body was covered by lesions, and that he probably had but a few months to live. ” ~The Guardian

Today, August 10th, 2018, the San Francisco jury awarded Johnson $289.2 million dollars in economic and non-economic damages, which is a landmark decision for thousands of others who are suing Monsanto for the same reasons. As reported by journalist Catherine Frompovich:

The Media Relations personnel of the law firm of Baum, Hedlund, Aristei & Goldman, PC emailed me at 6:20 PM Friday, August 10th, the verdict rendered by the jury in the 8-week trial whereby the jury found unanimously that Monsanto’s glyphosate-based Roundup weed killer caused Mr. Johnson to develop NHL, and that Monsanto failed to warn of this severe health hazard. Importantly, the jury also found that Monsanto acted with malice, oppression or fraud and should be punished for its conduct.” [Source]

The case has revealed a number of Monsanto internal documents which demonstrate that the corporation was aware of both insufficient research into the link between glyphosate (Roundup) and cancer, and that it also knew the link was likely provable. As noted by Frompovich, attorneys for the plaintiff’s law firm, Baum, Hedlund, Aristei & Goldman, PC, were able to prove intentional malice in the case:

“Many of these confidential Monsanto documents were unsealed for the first time,” said co-lead counsel David Dickens. “They show that Monsanto knew that its testing was insufficient and that there was a synergistic effect when glyphosate is combined with surfactants which help the glyphosate penetrate both plant and animal cell walls. [Source]

This case will certainly prove influential in the future as more plaintiff’s sue Monsanto for covering up the fact that their products kill people.

From the first moments Europeans landed on the shores of North America, a war was waged against the indigenous people who lived there. That war took the form of deceptive agreements, settlements, outright violence, genocide, and, after defeat on the battlefield, an attempt to erase Native American culture and history from the minds of the victims. This war on Native Americans has never ended. Instead, it has only intensified with the lessons learned from the indoctrination and police state techniques used on the majority American population via television, law enforcement brutality, austerity/dependency, and of course medical tyranny, psychiatric fascism, and DSS/CPS.

In this new phase of the war, DSS/CPS play an important role. The separation and destruction of the family unit has continued apace with both the Native American and American populations but, in the case of Native Americans, it not only functions as a way to remove children from their families, but also a way to remove them from their culture. In this sense, DSS/CPS now functions as the old Indian Boarding Schools of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries that were devised to “civilize” and forcibly assimilate Native American people into the dominant culture.

The South Dakota Department of Social Services is working with psychiatrists and Big Pharma to engage in what can only be described as “genocide-for-profit.” It is using techniques it has learned on the American population of using “social services,” police, and the courts to separate children from their families, creating a population of people who have grown up without a stable family upbringing or who simply disappear only to turn up later in sex slavery rings or are left to some other horrible fate.

What is known about this situation is that, in South Dakota, Lakota children are being forcibly removed from their homes, put into foster care or psychiatric facilities and then over-prescribed psychiatric drugs that often rival some of the heaviest doses given to psychotic adults.

Indeed, Lakota parents and grandparents are now reporting that it is routine for DSS to send police to their homes to forcibly remove their children.

Picture heavily armed men arriving to a home in the dead of night to wrench children from their beds to be taken away from their families and you most likely immediately go to images of Nazi Germany, Communist China or the Soviet Union. But this isn’t some historical aberration nor is it the practice of some foreign police state abroad, it’s the practice of the police state here at home.

After these children are removed from their families, psychiatric drugs are forced on the children without the consent of the parents, family, or the children themselves. After all, why would there be the need for consent? When the government views you as its property and when it can remove you or your children from your home, there really isn’t any reason it shouldn’t view psychiatric drugging as off limits.

Interestingly, both Federal Law and the Indian Child Welfare Act prohibit the practice of placing children in non-native homes, but that doesn’t stop the removal. It also doesn’t stop the practice of placing the children in non-native homes since it has been reported that around 90% of these children are placed in non-native homes.

As with the case of the Constitution, it seems rights really are “just a goddamn piece of paper.” When rights get in the way of agenda, then rights are ignored or erased from those very pieces of paper.

I highly encourage the reader to access the South Dakota ICWA Directors’ Special Report from 2012 entitled “Is South Dakota Over-Prescribing Drugs To Native American Foster Kids?” The findings of this report are absolutely horrifying. They show how spending for psychiatric medications for children in foster care has vastly increased, about eleven time over during the period of just a few years. These drugs include those like Zyprexa, Geodon, Prozac, and Abilify which even the FDA has prohibited from being used in children without consent of the parent or guardian. But, since the state has now assumed that role with little resistance from the population, children are being loaded up with these substances regardless. It is noteworthy that these anti-psychotic drugs are known to produce suicidal thoughts and actual suicides. It is also noteworthy that the rate for suicide for Lakota children is 12 times the average.

In addition, the Lakota Peoples’ Law Project has reported that over 63% of Lakota children who have been in the foster system are homeless, in prison, or dead by the time they reach 20 years old after being released from the system at age 18. In other words, after being locked in the foster system, 63% of them have two years of misery and struggle before their lives are over.

Daniel Sheehan, activist and attorney, investigated DSS and subsequently made a video entitled “South Dakota Exposed: Why The Department of Social Services Preys On Native Families,” where he reported that 53% of the South Dakota state budget is related to DSS. He also reported that the state receives $79,000 in federal funds annually for every child in foster care who is designated as “special needs.”

Sheehan says this DSS jihad began in earnest around 1996 when George Bush was governor of Texas and put in place “mandatory mental health screening” tests for all kids before they enter foster care. The Texas Medication Algorithm Project resulted in a number of lawsuits due to fraud and illegal payoffs between drug companies and individuals involved in the program.

But despite the bad reputation of the program, when Bush became President, he expanded the program of “mental screening” to apply to all states in order for them to receive funding in 2001.

While DSS terrorism is taking place all across the country and effecting every race and income bracket, few can deny that Native American children are being targeted. After all, 98% of Lakota kids test as “special needs,” which works out pretty well for a system desiring to steal children and a state looking for some extra cash. After all, it’s not just foster care facilities that get the money. In fact, those facilities only get a small portion of that money with most of it going to the state for “other purposes.” Also, as the Citizen’s Commission On Human Rights points out, “the increased psychiatric drugs sales keep the pharmaceutical companies in a happy frame of mind when it comes time to give campaign donations to South Dakota politicians running for re-election in the state government.”

Clearly, there is still an attempt to destroy the Native American population. But, what was once done through guns and warfare is now being done through policy and government directives. As Bruce Cockburn wrote in his song, “Indian Wars,” “It’s not breach-loading rifles and wholesale slaughter/It’s kick backs and thugs and diverted water.”

But it is not only about setting up foster care as another Indian Boarding School, it’s also about erasing the most important human connections; i.e., that of a child to its parents. It is also about destroying the traditional family unit, an agenda that is marching full steam ahead on the rest of the American population as well.

Americans have sat back for decades upon decades as “services” has slowly become “authorities” and where their children can now be kidnapped from their homes by force in the dead of night never to be seen again all on the basis of arbitrary decisions made by social workers. If Americans do not soon stand up to the police state and the terrorism of the DSS, they will soon wake up to find themselves with their own version of Ireland’s GIRFEC system where each child is assigned a social worker at birth and parents live in constant abject fear of their children disappearing into the black hole of the state.

What a mess.

As America has become ever more polarized, and those polarized factions have become more militant and less inclined to listen to—or even allow for the existence of—other viewpoints, we are fast becoming a nation of people who just can’t get along.

Here’s the thing: if Americans don’t learn how to get along—at the very least, agreeing to disagree and respecting each other’s right to subscribe to beliefs and opinions that may be offensive, hateful, intolerant or merely different—then we’re going to soon find that we have no rights whatsoever (to speak, assemble, agree, disagree, protest, opt in, opt out, or forge our own paths as individuals).

In such an environment, when we can’t agree to disagree, the bullies (on both sides) win and freedom suffers.

Intolerance, once the domain of the politically correct and self-righteous, has been institutionalized, normalized and politicized.

Even those who dare to defend speech that may be unpopular or hateful as a constitutional right are now accused of “weaponizing the First Amendment.”

On college campuses across the country, speakers whose views are deemed “offensive” to some of the student body are having their invitations recalled or cancelled, being shouted down by hecklers, or forced to hire costly security details. As The Washington Postconcludes, “College students support free speech—unless it offends them.”

At Hofstra University, half the students in a freshman class boycotted when the professor assigned them to read Flannery O’Connor’s short story “Artificial Nigger.” As Professor Arthur Dobrin recounts, “The boycotters refused to engage a writer who would use such an offensive word. They hadn’t read the story; they wouldn’t lower themselves to that level. Here is what they missed: The story’s title refers to a lawn jockey, a once common ornament of a black man holding a lantern. The statue symbolizes the suffering of an entire group of people and looking at it bring a moment of insight to a racist old man.”

It’s not just college students who have lost their taste for diverse viewpoints and free speech.

In Charlottesville, Va., in the wake of a violent clash between the alt-right and alt-left over whether Confederate statues should remain standing in a community park, City Council meetings were routinely “punctuated with screaming matches, confrontations, calls to order, and even arrests,” making it all but impossible for attendees and councilors alike to speak their minds.

In Maryland, a 90-year-old World War I Peace Cross memorial that pays tribute to the valor, courage and sacrifice of 49 members of the Prince George community who died in battle is under fire because a group of humanists believes the memorial, which evokes the rows of wooden Latin Crosses that mark the graves of WW I servicemen who fell on battlefields far away, is offensive.

On Twitter, President Trump has repeatedly called for the NFL to penalize players who take a knee in protest of police brutality during the national anthem, which clearly flies in the face of the First Amendment’s assurance of the right to free speech and protest (especially in light of the president’s decision to insert himself—an agent of the government—into a private workplace dispute).

On Facebook, Alex Jones, the majordomo of conspiracy theorists who spawned an empire built on alternative news, has been banned for posting content that violates the social media site’s “Community Standards,” which prohibit posts that can be construed as bullying or hateful.

Jones is not alone in being censured for content that might be construed as false or offensive.

Facebook also flagged a Canadian museum for posting abstract nude paintings by Pablo Picasso.

Even the American Civil Liberties Union, once a group known for taking on the most controversial cases, is contemplating stepping back from its full-throated defense of free (at times, hateful) speech.

“What are the defenders of free speech to do?” asks commentator William Ruger in Time magazine.

“The sad fact is that this fundamental freedom is on its heels across America,” concludes Ruger. “Politicians of both parties want to use the power of government to silence their foes. Some in the university community seek to drive it from their campuses. And an entire generation of Americans is being taught that free speech should be curtailed as soon as it makes someone else feel uncomfortable. On the current trajectory, our nation’s dynamic marketplace of ideas will soon be replaced by either disengaged intellectual silos or even a stagnant ideological conformity. Few things would be so disastrous for our nation and the well-being of our citizenry.”

Disastrous, indeed.

You see, tolerance cuts both ways.

This isn’t an easy pill to swallow, I know, but that’s the way free speech works, especially when it comes to tolerating speech that we hate.

The most controversial issues of our day—gay rights, abortion, race, religion, sexuality, political correctness, police brutality, et al.—have become battlegrounds for those who claim to believe in freedom of speech but only when it favors the views and positions they support.

Free speech for me but not for thee” is how my good friend and free speech purist Nat Hentoff used to sum up this double standard.

This haphazard approach to the First Amendment has so muddied the waters that even First Amendment scholars are finding it hard to navigate at times.

It’s really not that hard.

The First Amendment affirms the right of the people to speak freely, worship freely, peaceably assemble, petition the government for a redress of grievances, and have a free press.

Nowhere in the First Amendment does it permit the government to limit speech in order to avoid causing offense, hurting someone’s feelings, safeguarding government secrets, protecting government officials, insulating judges from undue influence, discouraging bullying, penalizing hateful ideas and actions, eliminating terrorism, combatting prejudice and intolerance, and the like.

Unfortunately, in the war being waged between free speech purists who believe that free speech is an inalienable right and those who believe that free speech is a mere privilege to be granted only under certain conditions, the censors are winning.

We have entered into an egotistical, insulated, narcissistic era in which free speech has become regulated speech: to be celebrated when it reflects the values of the majority and tolerated otherwise, unless it moves so far beyond our political, religious and socio-economic comfort zones as to be rendered dangerous and unacceptable.

Protest laws, free speech zones, bubble zones, trespass zones, anti-bullying legislation, zero tolerance policies, hate crime laws and a host of other legalistic maladies dreamed up by politicians and prosecutors (and championed by those who want to suppress speech with which they might disagree) have conspired to corrode our core freedoms, purportedly for our own good.

On paper—at least according to the U.S. Constitution—we are technically free to speak.

In reality, however, we are only as free to speak as a government official—or corporate entities such as Facebook, Google or YouTube—may allow.

Emboldened by phrases such as “hate crimes,” “bullying,” “extremism” and “microaggressions,” the nation has been whittling away at free speech, confining it to carefully constructed “free speech zones,” criminalizing it when it skates too close to challenging the status quo, shaming it when it butts up against politically correct ideals, and muzzling it when it appears dangerous.

Free speech is no longer free.

The U.S. Supreme Court has long been the referee in the tug-of-war over the nation’s tolerance for free speech and other expressive activities protected by the First Amendment. Yet the Supreme Court’s role as arbiter of justice in these disputes is undergoing a sea change. Except in cases where it has no vested interest, the Court has begun to advocate for the government’s outsized interests, ruling in favor of the government in matters of war, national security, commerce and speech.

When asked to choose between the rule of law and government supremacy, the Supreme Court tends to side with the government.

If we no longer have the right to tell a Census Worker to get off our property, if we no longer have the right to tell a police officer to get a search warrant before they dare to walk through our door, if we no longer have the right to stand in front of the Supreme Court wearing a protest sign or approach an elected representative to share our views, if we no longer have the right to voice our opinions in public—no matter how misogynistic, hateful, prejudiced, intolerant, misguided or politically incorrect they might be—then we do not have free speech.

What we have instead is regulated, controlled speech, and that’s a whole other ballgame.

Just as surveillance has been shown to “stifle and smother dissent, keeping a populace cowed by fear,” government censorship gives rise to self-censorship, breeds compliance, makes independent thought all but impossible, and ultimately foments a seething discontent that has no outlet but violence.

The First Amendment is a steam valve. It allows people to speak their minds, air their grievances and contribute to a larger dialogue that hopefully results in a more just world.

When there is no steam valve—when there is no one to hear what the people have to say—frustration builds, anger grows and people become more volatile and desperate to force a conversation. By bottling up dissent, we have created a pressure cooker of stifled misery and discontent that is now bubbling over and fomenting even more hate, distrust and paranoia among portions of the populace.

Silencing unpopular viewpoints with which the majority might disagree—whether it’s by shouting them down, censoring them, muzzling them, or criminalizing them—only empowers the controllers of the Deep State.

Even when the motives behind this rigidly calibrated reorientation of societal language appear well-intentioned—discouraging racism, condemning violence, denouncing discrimination and hatred—inevitably, the end result is the same: intolerance, indoctrination and infantilism.

It’s political correctness disguised as tolerance, civility and love, but what it really amounts to is the chilling of free speech and the demonizing of viewpoints that run counter to the cultural elite.

We’ve allowed ourselves to be persuaded that we need someone else to think and speak for us. And we’ve allowed ourselves to become so timid in the face of offensive words and ideas that we’ve bought into the idea that we need the government to shield us from that which is ugly or upsetting or mean.

The result is a society in which we’ve stopped debating among ourselves, stopped thinking for ourselves, and stopped believing that we can fix our own problems and resolve our own differences.

In short, we have reduced ourselves to a largely silent, passive, polarized populace incapable of working through our own problems with each other and reliant on the government to protect us from our fears of each other.

So where does that leave us?

We’ve got to do the hard work of figuring out how to get along again.

Charlottesville, Va., is a good example of this.

It’s been a year since my hometown of Charlottesville, Va., became the poster child in a heated war of words—and actions—over racism, “sanitizing history,” extremism (both right and left), political correctness, hate speech, partisan politics, and a growing fear that violent words would end in violent actions.

Those fears were realized when what should have been an exercise in free speech quickly became a brawl that left one activist dead.

Yet lawful, peaceful, nonviolent First Amendment activity did not kill Heather Heyer. She was killed by a 20-year-old Neo-Nazi who drove his car into a crowd of pedestrians in Charlottesville, Va.

Words, no matter how distasteful or disagreeable, did not turn what should have been an exercise in free speech into a brawl. That was accomplished by militant protesters on both sides of the debate who arrived at what should have been a nonviolent protest armed with sticks and guns, bleach bottles, balloons filled with feces and urine and improvised flamethrowers, and by the law enforcement agencies who stood by and allowed it.

This is what happens when we turn our disagreements, even about critically and morally important issues, into lines in the sand.

If we can’t agree to disagree—and learn to live with each other in peace and speak with civility in order to change hearts and minds—then we’ve reached an impasse.

That way lies death, destruction and tyranny.

Now, there’s a big difference between civility (treating others with consideration and respect) and civil disobedience (refusing to comply with certain laws as a means of peaceful protest), both of which Martin Luther King Jr. employed brilliantly, and I’m a champion of both tactics when used wisely.

Frankly, I agree with journalist Bret Stephens when he says that we’re failing at the art of disagreement.

As Stephens explains in a 2017 lecture, which should be required reading for every American:

“To say the words, ‘I agree’—whether it’s agreeing to join an organization, or submit to a political authority, or subscribe to a religious faith—may be the basis of every community. But to say, I disagree; I refuse; you’re wrong; etiam si omnesego nonthese are the words that define our individuality, give us our freedom, enjoin our tolerance, enlarge our perspectives, seize our attention, energize our progress, make our democracies real, and give hope and courage to oppressed people everywhere. Galileo and Darwin; Mandela, Havel, and Liu Xiaobo; Rosa Parks and Natan Sharansky — such are the ranks of those who disagree.”

What does it mean to not merely disagree but rather to disagree well?

According to Stephens, “to disagree well you must first understand well. You have to read deeply, listen carefully, watch closely. You need to grant your adversary moral respect; give him the intellectual benefit of doubt; have sympathy for his motives and participate empathically with his line of reasoning. And you need to allow for the possibility that you might yet be persuaded of what he has to say.”

Instead of intelligent discourse, we’ve been saddled with identity politics, “a safe space from thought, rather than a safe space for thought.”

Safe spaces.

That’s what we’ve been reduced to on college campuses, in government-run forums, and now on public property and on previously open forums such as the internet.

The problem, as I make clear in my book A Government of Wolves: The Emerging American Police State, is that the creation of so-called safe spaces—where offensive ideas and speech are prohibited—is just censorship by another name, and censorship breeds resentment, and resentment breeds conflict, and unresolved, festering conflict gives rise to violence.

Charlottesville is a prime example of this.

Anticipating the one-year anniversary of the riots in Charlottesville on August 12, the local city government, which bungled its response the first time around, is now attempting to ostensibly create a “safe space” by shutting the city down for the days surrounding the anniversary, all the while ramping up the presence of militarized police, in the hopes that no one else (meaning activists or protesters) will show up and nothing (meaning riots and brawls among activists) will happen.

What a mess.

In much of our thinking, the sacred world is divorced from that of secular technologies. And yet the sacred can be equally at home among our technologies since technology, in some form or another, has always been present alongside humanity—from fireplace to dwelling place.

Technology has by necessity had to pass through the rough stage of its growth in order to reach the finer, more subtle stage where it will learn how to merge and blend with human needs and aspirations. Just as a diamond in the rough is still a stone of value, so too is humanity in its “pre-polished” stage. We must allow the early tentative baby steps of our developing technological systems just as we need to be tolerant of our own shortcomings. Technology is evolving and transcending its earlier aspects – just as we are too. The transformation of human consciousness goes side by side with the transformation of our technological cultures. They are both corresponding expressions of each other. Our technologies can be taken to be the reflections of our creative imagination, as each stage of human consciousness reflects a mode of technology.

When we exhibited a cruder level of consciousness our technologies were themselves raw, clunky, and sometimes unforgiving. The gun was not created because technology demanded it but because we had the mindset for its need. Surveillance is not prevalent today within modern societies because technology wishes to spy on us. It is human beings who choose to spy on fellow human beings. Technology is not neutral either, because it does not exist separate from us. It is an extended reach of the human intention, and will remain this way unless forms of technology become a distinct type of sentient species. And even if a form of artificial intelligence did emerge from the complexities of our technologies, it would not be separate from us but, in an odd way, it would be a part of the family.

Technology has been a collaborative part of the human family since our ancestors discovered fire to keep them warm. We then enlisted technology to help build our temples, our megalithic structures, our towering gothic cathedrals, and our radio signals to the starry heavens. The technological arts and human faith are not in opposition, despite what it may seem like. In fact, the technological enterprise has been a consistent partner with the human religious endeavor. The enchantment with technology has religious roots that extend further back than the New World conquest, and more than a thousand years in the formation of Western consciousness. In truth, it goes far back into the origins of Christendom.

The Marriage of Technology and Salvation

The monastic enclaves were bastions of technological innovation, often hidden behind the high brick walls of the monastery. In those days what we refer to as technology was called the mechanical arts. The innovative monastic orders such as Cistercians and Benedictines were involved in developing and improving upon such devices as watermills, windmills, metal forging techniques, mechanical clocks, eyeglasses, and the spring wheel, among others. Monastic work helped spread the idea that the mechanical arts were aids to the spiritual life, which has had an enduring influence upon the European psyche. The influential Franciscan friar Roger Bacon stated that the mechanical arts were the birthright of the sons of Adam and that much great knowledge had been lost in the Fall yet might again be fully revived as part of the recovery toward original perfection as reflected in the image of God. Roger Bacon even went as far as urging the pope to develop new inventions in case the Antichrist should arrive on Earth and seize such new knowledge for his own advantage. Roger Bacon, as well as his famed work on optics, lenses, and weights, was also reputed to have been in possession of the famed bronze head, an automaton sometimes associated with alchemists. Raymond Lully, a contemporary of Bacon, is now considered by many to be a pioneer of computation theory due to his mechanical system for arranging information. Similarly, in the eighteenth century, the inventor, scientist, and philosopher Emanuel Swedenborg married his love for mechanical inventions (such as his flying machine) with his equal love for conversing openly with angels.

The marriage of technology with the religious drive for salvation continued with Francis Bacon who, in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, almost single-handedly revived the scientific pursuit.  Bacon viewed the development of science as both a technology and a means for redemption, a concept that was mirrored in the Rosicrucians who saw the mechanical arts as a valid path to illumination. These perspectives furthered the medieval identification of technology with transcendence and informed the emergent mindset of modernity. Transcendence is now a common theme within the emerging technologies of the twenty-first century, and which without doubt underlies some of our notions of artificial intelligence and transhumanism.

This spirit of discovery infused the beginnings of the Royal Society of London, which was founded in 1663 from the more secretive Invisible College. The Royal Society devoted their resources to many areas of technology including navigation instruments, ship construction, mining, metallurgy, military instruments, and energy devices. Behind the Royal Society flowed a deep esoteric stream that included the alchemical arts. According to historian Francis Yates, in the 1720s one out of every four English Freemasons was a fellow of the Royal Society.

[1]Many great technological innovators and engineers came from the ranks of Freemasonry; among the earliest civil engineers in England was John Desaguliers, third Grand Master of the Premier Grand Lodge of England. This spirit of invention also flowed strongly overseas through prominent US Masons (such as Benjamin Franklin). The École Polytechnique in France, which became one of the world’s premier engineering schools, was created by a group of Freemasons. Freemasons were the apostles of the religion of technology with ideals of technological transcendence.

One of the most world-changing technological discoveries of our recent era has been the magic of electricity. The word electricity first entered the English tongue in a 1650 translation of a treatise on the healing properties of magnets by Jan Baptist van Helmont, a Flemish physician and Rosicrucian who worked on the borderline between natural magic and modern chemistry. Indeed, many early references of electricity described the force in markedly alchemical terms, such as the ‘ethereal fire,’ or the ‘quintessential fire.’ And yet now we take it for granted that almost all our appliances plug into some invisible power grid. We take little or no notice of how our gadgets also produce electromagnetic fields that mesh with all the other unseen fields in our environment. And yet this ‘quintessential fire’ is now a part of our global network along with the ever-increasing flows of information. Now our technological prowess is propelling us towards the sacred spaces of the cosmos and its heavenly inhabitants.

What today we call space used to be known as heaven. As Bruce Murray, the former director of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, declared in 1979: “The search for extraterrestrial intelligence is like looking for God.”[2] Our technological gadgets allow us to become heavenly messengers riding on the recycled chariots of the gods. Interesting to note, although not surprising, is that the first generation of American astronauts all shared pronounced spiritual convictions and held strong religious faith (almost as if meeting with the starry heavens was closed to atheists). On the 1968 Christmas voyage of Apollo 8, the astronauts gave a Christmas Eve reading from Genesis that was beamed back down to Earth. The holy story of the Creation had been retold and revived through the mechanical arts. And to follow this, Edgar Mitchell (Apollo 14) left a microfilm on the lunar surface containing the first verse of Genesis in sixteen languages. From the story of the Creation to our story of creating, we are moving along the ascending spiral through our technologies of transcendence.

We are now set to leave the older, chunkier, more inequitable world behind us just as a rocket sheds its booster during the early stages of its launch. It will be our extended relations with technology that shall assist in the transcending of our more primitive selves.

Transcending the Tiger

And now we reach out to technology once again as we source new materials, new sustainable practices, and reformed infrastructures to support more ecologically aligned and integral cultures. We need humanity and technology working together toward a more sustainable ecosystem connecting people, lives, and events across the planet. And as human consciousness transcends its older thinking patterns, so too will our technologies respond to reflect this new thinking. As if parallel to our finer awareness and levels of self-reflection, modern technologies are becoming more ethereal, invisible, and blending into our surroundings—literally becoming occult. We now need secret code words, a special pass for the initiated, to log in to our information clouds in the ether. Our digital passwords have become the new magical spells. The hardware, the physical machine, is no longer the symbol of our time now but is representative of the previous stage. The hard-edged machine no longer casts a magic spell. The spell now being cast belongs beyond the mechanical apparatus and in the intangible yet fluid world of connections, algorithms, smart codes, and artificial intelligence.

The visionary architect and thinker Buckminster Fuller expressed a similar notion when he wrote of ‘ephemeralization’ where he noted the technological trend moving ever closer to the ephemeral. That is, the shift from heavy cables and towers or masts to fiber optics, space satellites, and Wi-Fi. Fuller saw early on how civilization was transforming itself from heavier materiality toward lighter, more subtle forms of connectivity and functionality. Soon the modern physical-digital landscape is going to seem an alien world to the old linear minds. And yet it is all part of the natural hybridization of evolving life upon planet Earth. Human cultures have always been a hybrid form of technoculture, from the earliest days of making fire, to firing sand to produce the windows through which we view the world outside our homes. Civilization has always been a collaborative task between our human-invented tools and our natural environments. And still the process is unfinished – humanity upon this planet has yet to mature. More magic is required, and more making of the soul stuff.

In our determination to be like Prometheus, our greatest benefactor who brought us fire and kindled our love for technology, we are compelled to develop a higher, more mature form of consciousness. A form that recognizes it must coexist alongside the flows, connections, and communications of our technological devices. Technology is not only a solid, physical object, a neat gadget that we hold in our hands. It involves the seamless flow and interplay of energy, information, influence, and all that constitutes the unseen, ethereal environments that operate in the background of our lives. It may now be said that ‘Technology embodies an image of the soul . . . redemptive, demonic, magical, transcendent, hypnotic, alive.’[3] It is the ambient architecture through which we navigate and upon which we increasingly depend. It is, and always has been, our human twin more than our tool.

Technology is also our link between the world of mind (noosphere) and the world of our cultural artifacts (technosphere). In the various X-Laboratories around the world there are inspired innovators creating the next addition to our technological membrane. With their secretive whispers, their peculiar customs, shared language, and closed fraternity, they are akin to the monasteries of old. The yearning for salvation through technology is stronger than ever, with humankind aspiring to become a part of the next phase in creation. The project of technology as our means of transcendence has been ongoing for millennia; it has always been the human sacred endeavor.

Fire was our first technology, and we haven’t stopped technologizing the transcendent light since. The fire of the gods is part of our evolutionary narrative. Technology enables us to fly, although we must not yet fly directly into the sun in case it melts the wax of our Icarus wings. Yet, like Icarus, we have the ambition, the courage, and perhaps too much arrogance, as we try to reach new heights. Our hope is that with a more refined awareness of our abilities and our potential we will also cultivate a more humble attitude to the starry heavens that await us.

megamerger between two of the world’s biggest agricultural corporations looms on the horizon. The seed and pesticide giant Monsanto is inching closer to uniting with the German pharmaceutical and chemical company Bayer—a consolidation that could spell disaster for farmers, pollinators, and affordable, healthy food.

Here’s why the Monsanto-Bayer merger is a toxic relationship:

One-Stop Shopping for Increased Pesticide Use

When the same people who sell seeds for pesticide-resistant crops also make the pesticides, there’s a huge incentive for that company to encourage chemical-heavy growing practices, cashing in twice on farmers who become ever more dependent on its products. And when pests and weeds inevitably develop a resistance to those chemicals? More seeds. More pesticides.

If the merger gets the green light, the result is a megacorporation, not a recipe for competition and innovation. In the past, such monopolies have cost small farmers big-time. Take corn, for example. As the likes of Monsanto and other big ag companies gobbled up smaller seed sellers in recent decades, the cost of corn seed nearly quadrupled while corn prices are roughly the same as they were in 1996.

Bad News for Bees and Butterflies

As you likely know, pollinators are in trouble. Bees are dying off in record numbers (without them, our crops would take a serious hit) and monarch butterfly numbers have dropped nearly 90 percent in just the past two decades. While climate change and habitat loss are contributing to these declines, we can also point a finger at neonics and glyphosate—two types of pesticides commonly found in Bayer and Monsanto products. Americans are spraying more and more of these toxins on crops and lawns—we used 3.5 million pounds of neonics in 2011 alone (double the amount used just five years earlier)—and pollinators are paying the price.

Our Wallets Could Also Be Taking a Hit, Along With Our Health

As farmers pay more for seeds and Monsanto-Bayer rakes in more cash, American families could be forking over more money at the grocery store. One in eight families in the U.S. already struggle to put dinner on the table, and climate change threatens to disrupt food production worldwide. Further, the World Health Organization classifies glyphosate, the widely used herbicide found in Monsanto’s Roundup, as a probable carcinogen, and increasing its use would only put more fieldworkers, consumers, and those living near farms at risk.

In these challenging times, we need a more diverse marketplace—one that values public health, the environment, and the rights of farmers—to spur innovation and encourage resilient food supplies. What we don’t need is a megacorporation with the power (and the financial incentive) to lock in a food system that douses our food and soils with toxic chemicals.

Marijuana, or cannabis, has been used for at least 5,000 years and has an extensive history of traditional uses as an industrial material and a botanical medicine all throughout Asia, Africa, Europe and America.1

Read on to learn more about medical marijuana’s healing benefits how it has gotten its bad rap and why you’d want your own state to approve its use, too.

What Is Medical Marijuana?

The term “medical marijuana” refers to the use of the whole, unprocessed marijuana plant and its pure extracts to treat a disease or improve a symptom.2 It must be sourced from a medicinal-grade cannabis plant that has been meticulously grown without the use of toxic pesticides and fertilizers.

Marijuana’s incredible healing properties come from its high cannabidiol (CBD) content and critical levels of medical terpenes and flavonoids. It also contains some tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the molecule that gives the psychoactive effects that most recreational users are after. Through traditional plant breeding techniques and seed exchanges, growers have started producing cannabis plants that have higher levels of CBD and lower levels of THC for medical use.

Although the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not yet approved medical marijuana,3 more and more physicians are starting to reverse their stand on the issue and swear by its effectiveness and health benefits.

In a 2015 CBS interview, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy acknowledged that marijuana may be useful for certain medical conditions, saying: “We have some preliminary data showing that for certain medical conditions and symptoms, marijuana can be helpful.”4

Likewise, CNN’s chief medical correspondent and neurosurgeon Sanjay Gupta also made a highly publicized reversal on his marijuana stance after the production of his two-part series “Weed.” In a commentary published on CNN’s website, he said:5

“There is now promising research into the use of marijuana that could impact tens of thousands of children and adults, including treatment for cancer, epilepsy and Alzheimer’s, to name just a few.

With regard to pain alone, marijuana could greatly reduce the demand for narcotics and simultaneously decrease the number of accidental painkiller overdoses, which are the greatest cause of preventable death in this country.”

How Does Medical Marijuana Work and What Diseases Can It Be Used For?

Historically, marijuana has been used as a botanical medicine since the 19th and 20th centuries.6Today, marijuana’s claim as a potential panacea is backed up by countless studies crediting its healing potential to its cannabidiol content.

There is actually an endocannabinoid system in the human body. This ancient biological system, which also exists in other mammals, was first described in the journal Science in 1992,7 and is said to be responsible for releasing human cannabinoids that interact with cannabinoid receptors found in virtually all your tissues, embedded in your cell membranes.

Cannabinoid receptors can be found in your brain, lungs, liver, kidneys and immune system. Both the therapeutic and psychoactive properties of marijuana occur when a cannabinoid activates a cannabinoid receptor.8

There’s still ongoing research as to how far they impact your health, but to date, it’s known that cannabinoid receptors play an important role in many body processes, including metabolic regulation, cravings, pain, anxiety, bone growth and immune function.9 Overall, it’s said that cannabinoids bring balance to your tissues and biological systems.

Dr. Allan Frankel, a board-certified internist in California who has successfully treated patients with medical marijuana for more than a decade, has personally seen tumors virtually disappear in some patients using no other therapy except taking 40 to 60 milligrams of cannabinoids a day. Other common ailments that may benefit from medical marijuana use include:

Arthritis, osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis10 Degenerative neurological disorders such as dystonia11 Multiple sclerosis12 Parkinson’s disease13 Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)14 Epilepsy and seizures15

CBD also works as an excellent painkiller and works well in treating anxiety issues.16 Cannabis oil, on the other hand, when applied topically may help heal sunburn overnight.

How to Obtain and Use Medical Marijuana

At present, medical cannabis is now legal in 30 U.S. states. Most of these areas permit its use under certain medical circumstances only, and some allow CBD oils or pills only. In eight states, it’s legal to be used recreationally.17,18

In states where medical marijuana is legal like California, Colorado, Vermont and New York, you can join a collective, or a legal entity consisting of a group of patients that can grow and share cannabis medicines with each other. By signing up as a member, you gain the right to grow and share your medicine.

Frankel notes that a patient who’s at the age of 18 can secure a medical cannabis card recommendation letter if their attending physician or doctor of osteopathic medicine (D.O.) advises or agrees to it. With your medical cannabis card, you now have the liberty to choose the collective you want to belong to. Medical marijuana can be administered to patients using one of the following methods:19,20

Inhalation — Allows the patient to titrate the dosage. It has an instantaneous effect as the medication is rapidly taken into the lungs and quickly absorbed through the capillaries into the bloodstream. The effects of inhaled cannabis will last approximately four hours. Smoking — Can be done using a joint or the cigarette form (hand-or machine-rolled), a pipe, or bong (water pipe). Smoking medical marijuana by joint is believed to be inefficient, though, as the medication goes with the smoke as the cigarette burns. Smoking small amounts using a water pipe is more advisable because the cool smoke is less irritating to the airway. This method is not recommended to anyone with lung damage. Vaporization — Like a nebulizer treatment, cannabis can be heated to a temperature that will release the medication in vapors to be inhaled by the patient. Sublingual (under the tongue) or oramucosal (in the oral cavity) delivery  Made possible using oils or tinctures, it is readily delivered into the bloodstream and provides a rapid effect. Tinctures can be administered through a dropper under the tongue or sprayed in the mouth to be absorbed in the oral cavity. This is highly recommended for nonsmoking patients. Oral ingestion — Nonsmokers can also take medical marijuana through pills or mandibles, which are edible cannabis products in the form of teas, cookies or brownies.

The primary drawback of this approach is that because cannabinoids are fat-soluble, there may be issues when it comes to absorption, depending on the patient’s metabolism. A good workaround for this problem is using cannabis butter, which fat-soluble cannabinoids blend well with. Topical application — Cannabis can be applied as an ointment, lotion or poultice for treating skin inflammations, arthritis and muscle pain. It is unclear how cannabinoids are absorbed transdermally, although its credit should also go to the more soluble terpenoids and flavonoids that also have anti-inflammatory properties.

Keep in mind: Make sure that your medicine has been sourced from a medicinal-grade cannabis plant without the threat of chemical residues, which may cause further harm. It’s also important to find a knowledgeable cannabis physician who can help you determine the correct amount you need, as proper dosing is crucial when using medical cannabis.

Potential Side Effects of Medical Cannabis

Dr. Margaret Gedde, a Stanford-trained pathologist and award-winning researcher who specializes in the therapeutic use of cannabis, says the only concern you’ll have to worry about medical marijuana is the psychoactivity of THC or its ability to make you feel “high.” Too high a dose of THC can also trigger anxiety. You can avoid this side effect by specifically looking for high CBD and low THC marijuana formulations.

“THC can induce anxiety if the dose is wrong or the strain is not compatible with that person. [Still], many use THC to relieve anxiety. Because we have hundreds of different strains of marijuana and cannabis, each of which is slightly different, there is a huge potential to customize [the drug] for each person,” Gedde explains.

She also notes that CBD and THC actually work very well in combination. She notes that CBD actually helps temper the psychoactivity of the THC. What’s more, when the plant is unheated or used raw, it actually does not contain THC, but rather THC acid (THCA). So if you eat it raw, you get the THCA, which is responsible for relieving pain and spasms. THCA acts as a synergizing agent, yet it doesn’t deliver the psychoactivity associated with THC. Hence, consuming marijuana raw will let you reap the benefits without the adverse effects.

Beware of Synthetic Marijuana

The risk brought by different versions of synthetic marijuana should also be considered. Imported from Asian countries under the guise of potpourri, herbal incense and even plant food, the synthetic powder is mixed in a lab and shipped to the U.S., where retailers spray it onto a leaf — often an herb or a spice — that can be smoked, just like pot.

It not only binds to cannabis receptors in your body up to 1,000 times more strongly than standard marijuana, but also produces gripping effects on serotonin and other receptors in your brain. You can’t overdose on real pot, but you CAN overdose on synthetic versions — and it doesn’t take very much.

Most people don’t realize how dangerous synthetic marijuana can be. Unlike medical marijuana, synthetic marijuana not only is void of any healing component, but also may put you at risk of serious side effects, including:21,22

Stroke Brain damage Seizure Kidney problem Cardiac problem Acute psychosis Tachycardia (an abnormally rapid heart rate) Hypokalemia (a deficiency of potassium in the bloodstream)

I highly recommend asking your physician or D.O. about reputable medicinal-grade marijuana plant growers or credible apothecaries near your area that sell natural cannabis products for medicinal purposes.

If Marijuana Is so Beneficial, Why Is It a Schedule 1 Drug?

In one of my interviews with Frankel, he explained how people have forgotten cannabis was once a botanical medicine, and how it became known as a notorious form of illegal drug:

“What happened in the ’60s and ’70s was that due to desires for psychedelia, the changes in the war in Vietnam, and the war on drugs with Nixon, the types of strains that were available and the demand for psychedelia changed. Before we knew it, CBD — due to a lack of ‘stoniness’ — was bred out of the plant.”

As a result of growers breeding out the all-important CBD, marijuana became known primarily as a plant that gets you high. Its original medicinal properties and uses largely fell by the wayside.

Currently in the U.S., marijuana is classified as a Schedule 1 controlled substance, a category reserved specifically for the most dangerous illicit drugs, such as heroin, lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) and ecstasy.23 Based on the 1970 Controlled Substance Act, drugs from this group:24

  • Have a high potential for abuse
  • Have no accepted medical use in the United States
  • Have lack of accepted safety under medical supervision

Personally, I find it disheartening that something as promising as marijuana is being demonized due to inappropriate use.

It’s such a shame, too, that the federal government seemed so careless in approving the recreational use of marijuana (which made the ongoing cycle of substance abuse and addiction in our country even worse), but played it tough when it comes to approving medical cannabis, which could potentially benefit countless of people by improving many conditions and taking the place of a number of synthetic drugs. Who would not want that? Well, clearly, not those whose bottom line would be affected.

Stay Informed on Medical Marijuana and Other Homeopathic Treatments

Homeopathic remedies have always been under assault, and the case with medical cannabis is a clear example. Despite its outstanding health potential if used in medicinally appropriate methods, it’s still shunned by federal agencies and demonized to be “dangerous” — even though there’s no risk of overdose or death from cannabis, which is something that cannot be said for other conventional remedies like opioids.

It really all boils down to freedom of choice. I believe that if a homeopathic is working for you, then you should be allowed to use it, especially considering the other things you’re allowed to use but expose you to significant if not extreme risks, like alcohol, cigarettes or opioids and certain over-the-counter medications.

What makes our society so sick? How do we know for sure that our society is unhealthy? Is there a way to reason our way into a clear explanation for why our society is unfit for healthy human beings attempting to evolve in a healthier way?

It really comes down to answering one critical question: Do you want to live, or do you want to die? As Albert Camus famously stated, “There is but one truly serious philosophical problem, and that is suicide. Judging whether life is or is not worth living amounts to answering the fundamental question of philosophy.” It seems extreme, but in order to get down to the crux of the issue, we need to ask extreme questions.

If your answer is ‘life,’ then it stands to reason that you want that life to be as healthy as possible. If your answer is suicide, then obviously all other questions of survival are irrelevant, and you fall under the null hypothesis.

Let’s assume that your answer is ‘life.’ What is the next logical question? It stands to reason that all subsequent questions would be: What do I need to do in order to continue my survival? The first answer to that question must be: I need to breathe clean air. After that? I need to drink clean water. Then, I need to eat healthy food. And then, I need to find healthy human relations. So on, and so forth.

This gives us a four-fold foundation to begin to see why the system is so unhealthy, while possibly shedding some light on how we can heal our profoundly sick society. Let’s break it down…

1. Our Society Pollutes the Air

So, you want to live? Well you’ve got to breathe air. And if you want to live healthy, you must breathe clean air. The first fundamental reason how we know we live in a profoundly sick society is when it becomes evident that our society is directly affecting the quality of the air in a negative and unhealthy way.

Forget the ongoing debate about climate change and global warming. Some people’s cognitive dissonance is so powerful that no amount of arguing will convince them. It will only solidify their hardheaded stance.

Focus instead on the real problem; something we can all agree on: pollution. There is no denying that our society’s excessive use of fossil fuels is a dangerous air pollutant. Just look at the horizon in almost every single major city on the planet. If it’s harming the air quality there, then it’s harming the air quality everywhere. The planet is an interconnected system. Everything is connected to everything else. Especially when it comes to the flow of air.

It’s simple: when our waste output exceeds the planet’s ability to absorb it in a healthy way –that is to say, in a way that preserves the integrity, stability, and beauty of the biotic community– then we know, without a doubt, that it’s unhealthy and that we must scale back. Otherwise, our health and the planet’s health, is compromised.

A society that continues to output more waste into the air than the atmosphere can absorb in a healthy way is a profoundly sick society.

2. Our Society Pollutes the Water

So, you’ve decided you want to live and you’ve taken care of breathing air. The next step, if you wish to continue your survival, is to find clean water. This is no easy task in a sick society.

As predicted, the Keystone Pipeline has leaked. Twice! Once on May 4, 2017 (84,000 gallons of oil) and on November 16, 2017 (210,000 gallons). Then there was the Iowa Pipeline (140,000 gallons) on January 31, 2017, the Rover Pipeline in Ohio on May 10, 2017, and the Texas Pipeline (over 50,000 gallons of crude oil) on July 13, 2017. Then there was the Gulf of Mexico oil spill (400,000 gallons of oil). And these were just a few of the larger spills in 2017 alone.

The real war being fought on this planet is between water protectors (healthy people) and oil mongers (unhealthy people). Water represents life, and oil represents entropy. But, it’s not quite so simple. There is a kind of yin-yang dynamic going on here. The white dot on the oil side of the yin-yang represents energy and progress. The black dot on the water side of the yin-yang represents pollution. We use oil for energy to propel our civilizations progressively forward but at a great cost –rampant, poisonous pollution.

The problem is that the black dot on the water side is getting out of control, leading to environmental collapse at best and ecocide at worst. If we’re not careful, the yin-yang of our world is going to be a black mass of oily entropy spinning through space –a burnt-out husk of a planet. Something’s got to give.

Oil has been an industrious boon for our species. No doubt. It helped us achieve many technological marvels. But we were naïve to its pollutant power. At this point, the pollution is so bad that it supersedes the gain. Burning oil, coal, and gas is simply too toxic for us and our environment. We cannot, in good conscience, continue to burn through this now outdated mode of energy use. If we would be a healthy society, we must switch to solar, wind, electric, tide, and especially hemp, or we will burn ourselves out.

A society that continues to use outdated energy-producing methods which cannot be absorbed by their environment in a healthy way, is a profoundly sick society.

3. Our Society Pollutes Our Food

So, you still want to live, and you’ve managed to breathe air and drink water. The next step is to consume clean and healthy food. Again, this is no easy task in a sick society.

From Agent Orange to Roundup, from Nestle to Monsanto, from DDT to GMO, from Fukushima to overfished waters, from hoarding to unnecessary starvation, and everything in between, the range of ways our society has managed to destroy our food supply is laughable.

Do you know why so many fish products are mislabeled? Because corporations don’t have the guts to tell you that the fish you like are practically gone. Yes, 70%of the world’s fisheries are either completely exploited, overexploited or collapsed as a result of overfishing and warmer waters. This should come as a wake-up call of the highest order.

Again, human pollution is the biggest part of the problem. Especially plastic pollution. But another big part of the problem is how we farm, how we distribute (or lack thereof), and how we waste our food. The utter failure of our distribution system undermines the health of our species. It prevents people from thriving because they are expending all their vital energy on merely surviving.

On one end of the spectrum, we have wealthy people hoarding and/or wasting enough food to feed an entire third-world country; on the other end, we have the poor pinching pennies to eat the unhealthiest (but cheapest) “food” ever created: fast food.

One way to fix at least part of this daunting problem is through polyculture farming. Where monoculture is about industry, polyculture is about diversity. Monoculture suffers from a lack of biodiversity and nutrients in soil. Polyculture thrives with biodiversity and replenishes soil. Monoculture requires pesticides. Polyculture is a function of biological pest control. Monoculture is unnatural. Polyculture is natural. Monoculture leads to disease and famine. Polyculture leads to abundance and permaculture. Monoculture is about money over people. Polyculture is about people and healthy food over money.

A society that continues to pollute, mismanage, hoard, poison, and poorly distribute its own food supply is a profoundly sick society.

4. Our Society Creates Unhealthy Individuals

So, you’ve managed to breathe air, drink water, and eat food. But is it healthy? The question ‘do we live in a profoundly sick society’ comes down to this critical question: is the air, the water, and the food we are consuming healthy? If not, is it because of something our society is doing to the air, the water, and the food that is causing it to be unhealthy? If so, what are you, as a member of society, going to do about it?

Are you just going to ignore it and hope it works itself out? Are you going to wait for technology to bail us out somehow? Are you waiting for a hero to save the day?

The main reason we live in a profoundly sick society is because most people do nothing about the unhealthy system that props it up. As a result, we live in a sick society that creates unhealthy individuals which creates more unhealthy individuals. The unhealthy cycle will continue to repeat itself until healthy-minded individuals rise-up to change it. This is an arduously Herculean task, but no task is more important. The very health, indeed the very evolution, of our species is at stake.

When it comes down to it, a society that breathes dirty air, drinks polluted water, eats poisoned food and then continues to do all the things that cause dirty air, polluted water and poisoned food is a profoundly sick society.

There is growing evidence that our addiction to cellphones could be impacting brain functionality and be the cause of stress, anxiety, insomnia and a lack of attention and focus. Now a new report has found that we’re not the only living things to be affected by our increasing dependence on wireless technology. Mammals, birds, insects and even plants are likely being harmed by the electromagnetic radiation (EMR) emanating from Wi-Fi, cellphone towers, broadcast transmitters and power lines, according to a new analysis of 97 peer-reviewed studies conducted by EKLIPSE, a biodiversity and ecosystem project funded by the European Union.

The researchers said that “evidence is accumulating that mammals (e.g., bats and mice) have a magnetic sense” that is affected by radio-frequency-modulated electromagnetic fields (RF-EMR). Birds in particular may be highly susceptible. The researchers found that even weak magnetic fields in the radio frequency range can disrupt birds’ magnetoreception, their ability to use the Earth’s magnetic fields to orient themselves and find their way home.

Homing pigeons are well-known for their magnetoreception, but this sense has also been detected in other animals, like red foxes, and there is evidence that even large mammals like deer use the planet’s magnetic fields to sense direction. A number of invertebrates, including worms, mollusks and fruit flies also use this ability.

The report also concluded that EMR can also alter the metabolism of plants, causing “significant changes … demonstrated at cellular and molecular levels.” The authors noted that even a low level exposure to EMR “caused a rapid increase in stress-related transcript accumulation in tomato [plants].” Transcription is the first phase in the expression of a gene, in which a specific segment of DNA is copied into RNA.

The authors said that their findings indicate “an urgent need to strengthen the scientific basis of the knowledge on EMR and their potential impacts on wildlife,” specifically calling out the “need to base future research on sound, high-quality, replicable experiments so that credible, transparent and easily accessible evidence can inform society and policy-makers to make decisions and frame their policies.”

The UK charity Buglife (which proposed the analysis) warned that there wasn’t enough research to determine limits to EMR pollution. The group said that “serious impacts on the environment could not be ruled out” and urged that 5G transmitters should not be placed near street lights, which attract nocturnal insects like moths, nor in areas near wildlife.

Buglife CEO Matt Shardlow, who served on the experts steering group of the report, warned that “there is a credible risk that 5G could impact significantly on wildlife.” He added:

“We apply limits to all types of pollution to protect the habitability of our environment, but as yet, even in Europe, the safe limits of electromagnetic radiation have not been determined, let alone applied. This is a classic case of out of sight out of mind, just because humans cannot see electromagnetic radiation this does not mean that animals cannot ‘see’ the pollution or be significantly impacted at a neural or cellular level. A proper research program and clear policy measures are long overdue.”

Shardlow specifically warned of the current rollout of 5th-generation wireless systems or 5G networks, and called on telecommunications firms to research the impact of their wireless technology on wildlife and make their findings public. In May, Qatar become the first nation in the world to have a 5G network. The worldwide commercial launch of 5G is expected in 2020.

The report authors also said that strong EMR fields increase the temperature in living tissue, but the intensity needed to induce such heating is “not experienced by wildlife (so far).” It’s notable that they left the door open to this other potential emerging threat, as cellphone adoption rates are steadily rising globally. The number of smartphone users worldwide is forecast to grow from 2.1 billion in 2016 to around 2.5 billion in 2019, according to Statista, a market research firm. That means more cell towers—and more EMR being emitted into the environment.

“When you start to observe and realize that swallows and house martins no longer nest in towns and villages, when you realize that the sparrows have all disappeared, that in the evenings there are no bats flying in the dusk and that you no longer hear owls hooting, then you will begin to know what effect microwaves from cell towers and antennas are having on the environment,” said one commenter to a One World News article about the report.

The report comes on the heels of a recent appeal to the United Nations, signed by more than 200 scientists from 41 countries, urging the international body to address the risks posed electromagnetic fields (EMF), physical fields produced by objects charged by electromagnetic fields and radiofrequency radiation. Specifically, the scientists want the UN to “recognize that EMF exposure is an emerging health and environmental crisis that requires a high priority response.”

“Biologists and scientists are not being heard on the committees that set safety standards,” said Dr. Martin Blank of the Department of Physiology and Cellular Biophysics at Columbia University and signatory of the appeal, in a video address on the website of International EMF Alliance, a group founded in 2009 that disseminates information to policymakers and health authorities about the potential effects of electromagnetic radiation. “The biological facts are being ignored and as a result, the safety limits are much too high. They are not protective.”

Though evidence is mounting that humans may also be physiologically affected by EMF, the jury is still out on the impact of long-term low-frequency exposure. The World Health Organization (WHO) concluded that “current evidence does not confirm the existence of any health consequences from exposure to low level electromagnetic fields.” However, the agency does admit that “some gaps in knowledge about biological effects exist and need further research.”

But the WHO is partially responsible for the widespread concern. As Bob Berman points out in his recent bookZapped: From Infrared to X-rays, the Curious History of Invisible Light:

“Some of the fears are based on a report issued in 2011 by the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). The agency had gathered in Lyon, France, to discuss scientific studies surrounding the question of whether there’s a relationship between radio-frequency-modulated electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) and cancer. After intense deliberations, and to the great surprise of the world at large, experts decided to classify RF-EMF waves emitted by cell phones, cell towers, and Wi-Fi networks as category 2B, indicating a ‘possible human carcinogen.'”

For Dr. Blank and his colleagues raising the warning flag to the United Nations, the evidence is clear. “Cellphones, tablets, Wi-Fi, etc. Putting it bluntly, they are damaging the living cells in our bodies and killing many of us prematurely,” he said in his video address. “Rising exposure to electromagnetic radiation is a global problem. The World Health Organization and international standard-setting bodies are not acting to protect the public’s health and well-being. International exposure guidelines for electromagnetic fields must be strengthened.”

In his video address, Dr. Blank suggested that the current EMF safety limits may be inadequate due to the influence of the telecommunications industry on the policymakers. “More protection will probably result from full disclosure of possible conflicts of interest between regulators and industry,” he said.

“We have created something that is harming us, and it is getting out of control. Before Edison’s lightbulb, there was very little electromagnetic radiation in our environment. The levels today are very many times higher than natural background levels and are growing rapidly because of all the new devices that emit this radiation. An example that a lot of us have right now in our pockets is the cellphone.”

Many centuries ago, Lao Tzu, spoke of the four cardinal virtues, teaching that when we practice them as a way of life, we come to know the truth of the universe. The ancient Chinese master said that living and practicing these teachings can open you to higher wisdom and greater happiness, as they realign you to the source and enable you to access all the powers that source energy has to offer.

Lao Tzu means ‘Old Master,’ and he was believed by some to be a God-realised being. The Four Cardinal Virtues are found in the Tao Te Ching, a collection of sayings expounding the principal Taoist teachings. It has 81 short poetic verses packed full of universal wisdom for politics, society, and personal life, and aims to support personal harmony through the right view and understanding of existence. The Tao (also known as the Way or the Dao) has baffled its readers for centuries with its cryptic and deliberate contradictions, yet it offers a profound contemplation to seekers, lending itself to varied interpretations and inner questioning.

The Tao Te Ching is the basic text of Taoism, but it has also influenced Confucianism and Chinese Buddhism, and is among some of the most translated works in world literature. This powerful text of the Tao, road or way of life, reflects the force of the universe and even the universe itself. While many have tried to make sense of its mystery, one man immersed himself in this text, literally living its wisdom, and then distilled the essence of these ancient mystery teachings for a modern audience.

In 2006, the late Wayne Dyer was inspired to spend his entire 65th year reading, researching, and meditating on Lao Tzu’s messages, going into retreat to practice them and ultimately write down the insights he felt Lao Ttzu wanted us to know.  Dr Dyer researched ten well respected translations of the text and the result of that life-changing year was his best-selling book Change Your Thoughts—Change Your Life: Living the Wisdom of the Tao.

Affectionately known as the Father of Motivation, Dr Dyer says Lao Tzu’s four cardinal virtues represent the surest way to leave habits and excuses behind and reconnect to your original nature. “The more your life is harmonised with the four virtues, the less you’re controlled by the uncompromising ego.”

The Tao encourages us to be in touch with our own selves, particularly our deepest selves, for when you know who you really are, that is when you discover eternal peace. Lao Tzu liked to compare different parts of nature to different virtues. He said, “The best people are like water, which benefits all things and does not compete with them. It stays in lowly places that others reject. This is why it is so similar to the Way (Dao).” Each part of nature can remind us of a quality we admire and should cultivate ourselves—the strength of the mountains, the resilience of trees, the cheerfulness of flowers.

We enter life with a seemingly clean slate, a spectacular pathway ahead of us with unlimited potentials and choices. To navigate our lives and get a handle on the challenges and gifts life will throw at us, it is useful to have some sort of compass so that we don’t end up on the rocks or lost at sea.

For many people this may be religion, morality, or the belief systems passed down by their family, and they may derive a sense of strength and direction through their strongly held inner compass sourced in this integrity. No matter what happens in life, they’ll always fall back on that maxim, whether it be, for example, to lead from the heart, or to be kind.

“To realise the constancy and steadiness in your life is to realise the deep nature of the universe. This realisation is not dependent on any transitory internal or external condition, rather it is an expression of one’s own immutable spiritual nature. The only way to attain the Universal Way is to maintain the integral virtues of the constancy, steadiness and simplicity in one’s daily life.” – Lao Tzu

The four cardinal virtues, or rules for living life, can provide a framework for a life filled with inner peace and purpose.

1. Reverence for all Life

This virtue manifests as having unconditional love and positive regard for all creatures in the universe, starting with ourselves, then this will naturally flow out to all others. This reverence is for all life, not just some forms. It is honouring all forms of life, and at its core has an innate spiritual understanding of how the universe truly works – that we are all sparks of the one fire. When we live with reverence for all life, we surrender our need to control and to dominate. We naturally come into heartfelt appreciation and gratitude for all of life. This first virtue is the key to diminishing the ego.

“Affirm this as often as you can, for when you see yourself in a loving way, you have nothing but love to extend outward. And the more you love others, the less you need old excuse patterns, particularly those relating to blame.” Wayne Dyer

2. Natural Sincerity

This virtue encompasses kindness and authenticity. To me, it has a feeling of compassion and an all-encompassing love for all beings. When we are sincere and act with integrity, we move towards peace and inner tranquility. Our conscience clear, we don’t have the inner niggles over our dishonest actions that can erode a peaceful mind. Much of these four pillars relate to karma, the law of cause and effect, and maintaining equilibrium and impeccability. This virtue is honesty, simplicity, and faithfulness, says Wayne Dyer. It is about being true to yourself and walking your talk.

According to Dyer, if you find this challenging, try affirming, “I no longer need to be insincere or dishonest. This is who I am, and this is how I feel.”

3. Gentleness

Gentleness is a deeply powerful trait. Often interpreted as weakness, gentleness is sensitivity, respect, and reverence for all life. Perhaps this virtue can be summed up by the Dalai Lama who often says; “my religion is very simple, my religion is kindness.” In life, it is far more important to be kind than to be right, and to be kind rather than important. Gentleness is an umbrella for forgiveness, acceptance and love. It is much like the yogic term ahimsa, or non-violence. When we give up being right and being superior, we start accepting ourselves and others, and so much conflict in our lives drops away.

“Gentleness generally implies that you no longer have a strong ego-inspired desire to dominate or control others, which allows you to move into a rhythm with the universe. You cooperate with it, much like a surfer who rides with the waves instead of trying to overpower them. Gentleness means accepting life and people as they are, rather than insisting that they be as you are. As you practice living this way, blame disappears and you enjoy a peaceful world.” – Wayne Dyer

4. Supportiveness

When we are supportive of ourselves, with kind words, loving actions and self-care, we are naturally supportive of others. This virtue is the basic tenet of humanity. We are naturally social beings and, at our core, we want to be with others and to help others. Many experiments show how humans are motivated by connection and will move towards this rather than other things. When we give to others, share and support others, we become happy.  Our lives become meaningful and our hearts full. Supportiveness is about service. Open hearted service for the sake of helping others and benefiting others, with no thought to our own gain. Supportiveness is also about holding space for another, listening to another, and being there for others. It is radical loving kindness in action. This quote by the poet, Hafiz, sums it up: “Even after all this time, the sun never says to the earth ‘you owe me.’”

“The greatest joy comes from giving and serving, so replace your habit of focusing exclusively on yourself and what’s in it for you. When you make the shift to supporting others in your life, without expecting anything in return, you’ll think less about what you want and find comfort and joy in the act of giving and serving.” Wayne Dyer

Let these four virtues fragrance your life, and notice the grace and ease that will come your way. For each one of these virtues brings in a way of being that is light, graceful and flowing and will help you shed destructive, self defeating patterns that sabotage your inner peace and happiness.

This article was written just after the ‘Blood Moon’ eclipse began in Australia on July 28, 2018…

For some people it is just an astronomical event when the moon is imprinted with the earth’s shadow from the sun, and for others there is astrological symbolism and energetic meaning to it too.

From the latter point of view, lunar eclipses in general symbolise facing thyself. They reflect ushering out the old and bringing in the new, on both personal and collective levels. This can be a painful process at times, because serious change is usually a challenge for most people. However, this blood moon represents reflection, healing and change, particularly regarding the ageing fracture between the masculine and feminine. This isn’t just on an external level, but also internally too. After all, we all have both energies inside us, which unfortunately most of us haven’t integrated.

Now regardless if you personally believe in the philosophy of ‘as above, so below’, this lunar eclipse was nearly the longest of what is theoretically possible (it went for one hour and forty three minutes of a maximum one hour and forty seven minutes). Therefore, it gave us almost all it could for us to see it (and feel it). In that essence it represents deep reflection, which should encourage us to look deep into our own lives. As noted in this article: “This is a time for us to purge, cleanse, and detoxify.”

And how many of us need to take greater care of ourselves? How many of us need to detoxify our bodies and minds? The answer is essentially all of us. Whether it be physical health, mental health, or even just how we prioritise our time, we all have ways in which we’re not just reaching our ideals now and again, but we’re nowhere near them.

Many people have heard of ‘Dry July’, where we put down the beer and wine for a month to cleanse our bodies of alcohol. Although we probably haven’t done it exactly this way, the basic concept would have been applied in many manners, including implementing various alcohol-free, dieting, detoxification, fitness and fasting rituals for different lengths over our lives.

However, sometimes a grand reboot is required and if we don’t choose to do this consciously our natural growth cycle will always find a way to set us up with the opportunity, sometimes smooth and at others times rough, even if we choose not to capitalise on it.

The Birth of Flawless August

My partner Nicole co-hosts the ‘Mad Magic’ podcast with me, which is available on iTunes and all podcast Apps (see below for an episode on Flawless August). She is just as passionate as me when it comes to continuously growing and changing our lives. We’ve been practicing meditation, self-administered psychotherapy and other growth modalities for many years, but in recent months we’ve felt like a new wave of self-care was incredibly important for us.The other night we were discussing this topic and at one point I made a cheeky remark about ‘Dry July’, finishing it up with a joke about implementing ‘Flawless August’. The idea seemingly sprung from nowhere and at the time we weren’t serious about it, but after sleeping on it we’ve decided to give it a serious crack.However, it’s not just about alcohol. It’s about everything. It’s about what we put into our bodies, what we put into our minds, and how we behave towards ourselves and the world at large.

Therefore it encourages self-reflection, self-actualisation and self-mastery.

I’ve decided to share this with you in case you also have a deep yearning to upgrade your own life. So many of us are too focused on political, geopolitical, environmental, conspiratorial and other external affairs without giving ourselves the respect of taking great care our psychological and spiritual development. Of course it is important to shine light onto the injustices of our world, but it’s equally important to shine light on the injustices that we inflict on ourselves.

After all, if we truly want to bring about a better world for our children, then we need to become that which we desire our world to be.

To achieve it, we need to ensure we are at least pouring in as much energy internally, as we are externally. The adage ‘love yourself to love others’ has earned notoriety as a cliché, however the insight it offers is still extraordinarily potent: the more we love, respect, honour and care for ourselves, not in vane but authentic ways, the greater capacity we have to share it with our world, including other people and our environment.

So in as much as the last several decades have been extraordinarily powerful in terms of becoming more conscious and sovereign human beings, which has given rise to large waves of activism and change agency, the way we treat ourselves on an individual level is in most cases astoundingly inhumane. There is so much sickness, stress and sadness. Our habits are often self-abusive. Our self-care is replaced by dollars and doctors. We’re collectively screaming for a more just world, but individually we’re often failing to get even close to adequately caring for ourselves.

What is Flawless August?

The concept isn’t to become perfect, because that’s simply impossible in a dynamic system such as the human experience. So it’s not about becoming flawless at all, as growth is a never-ending and outright wonderful process of life. Alternatively, think of it like updating the software on your computer or phone: Flawless August is simply recognising ways we could improve how we treat ourselves – including our human family and natural systems too – and then acting on it.

Or put another way, Flawless August is about striving towards becoming more of not just who we want to be, but more of who we need to be.

In that light, therefore, it’s a month of education. It’s learning ideas and strategies that are of immense benefit to ourselves and others. It’s expanding our consciousness around more authentic and honourable ways to live, and being able to share that humbly with others. It’s also about understanding that we’ll never be perfect, yet if we continuously get into more healthy patterns and behaviours, it is simply a more wise way to exist.

With that said, below is a list of ideas and ideals to guide you. If it speaks to you, share this article and hashtag the fuck out of #FlawlessAugust. If you’re not that interested personally, you can bet there will be many friends and family in your social circle who will be, so give them a head’s up by sharing this through your networks.

You can do whatever you like with it according to your personal circumstances. Not all ‘wants and needs’ will be applicable to every one of us, however based on my many years of providing personal and professional guidance it’s not just intelligent to have a general plan for our future, but it’s also highly effective to actually write down a list of goals which you look at every day to remind and inspire you to take the steps required to achieve them.

Trust me; it works. Writing down our goals and desires is incredibly powerful at helping them to manifest, so if you’re serious about wanting to think, feel and act better, then use this list as a reference for your own future growth and write down your own personal version of it too.

In any case, I hope that it helps you in some small or even large ways.

And to reiterate, this isn’t about doing everything flawlessly, although you are obviously free to attempt it if you so desire (including having a complete detoxification of your mind and body). But for succinct sakes, Flawless August has two primary purposes:

  1. Learn more about what you and the world require; and
  2. Do more to actualise it.

The Four Focuses of Flawless August

1. Be Mindful of the Food We Eat

The food we put into our bodies is extremely important for our short and long term health, as more and more studies show that many physical illnesses such as cancer, diabetes, obesity, heart disease, allergies, arthritis and other common ailments, as well as mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety, are linked to poor nutrition, an unhealthy gut and the dangerous chemical additives that are found in processed foods and sprayed on fruits and vegetables.

Of course every person’s circumstances are different and the reasons for mental and physical health problems are typically multilayered, which is why holistic health responses are growing throughout the Western world.

In addition, each individual is biologically unique and has different nutritional needs and reactions to various food groups. Therefore, researching and discovering what best works for our body and mind is our personal responsibility, including consulting a holistic health practitioner when relevant.

Ideas and Ideals:

  • Grow your own food and buy from local, organic farmers where possible;
  • Food should be as natural as possible, meaning organic, non-GMO and non-sprayed vegetables and fruits;
  • Avoid foods that are processed and contain toxins and harmful chemicals;
  • Consume food high in nutrition (eat seasonally and direct from the farm where possible);
  • Include raw foods at times too;
  • Limit or eliminate dairy products, as they can generate significant health issues;
  • Limit or eliminate sugar in your diet as it has similar addictive impacts on the brain as heroin and cocaine and has adverse health effects;
  • As a general rule, eat more plants and less meat than our usual diet as excessive meat consumption, especially red meat, is linked to cancer and other health issues;
  • Limit or eliminate processed meats such as ham and bacon, as they are considered carcinogenic by the World Health Organisation (WHO);
  • If we must eat animals, then they should be sourced locally if possible (including personally fishing and/or hunting), not factory farmed, are grass fed (not grain fed), and are treated humanely; and
  • As another general rule we should eat less food than we usually do, as overeating is the norm; instead, eat more nutrition-rich foods.

2. Be Mindful of the Liquids We Drink

As with food, the liquids we consume can have a positive or negative impact on our health.

3. Be Mindful of Self-Care

Many people just allow the corporatised medicinal system to deal with issues regarding their health, however given the issues of false medical claimsineffectiveness of many pharmaceutical drugshigh addiction to dangerous prescriptionscorruption and mainstream avoidance of cheap and natural medicines (such as baking soda, as well as Cannabis for the last Century), it is important for each of us to take greater responsibility when responding to our health and medicinal needs.

In addition, a simple diet change to nutrition-rich and toxin-less plant foods is in many cases all a person needs to do to cure their illness. Then of course preventative measures to avoid health problems are a must, as are educational and developmental strategies for our minds.
Plus, we all need some downtime and good times in our lives too.

I have broken self-care into eight sub-categories as it was integral for me when I was getting myself out of the depression I developed in early adulthood, as well as working out the specific ways I needed to evolve. These areas more or less overlap, but it’s a handy way to better understand ourselves, and our needs.

Ideas and Ideals:

  • Physical Health
    • More movement, greater fitness, self-massage, full body stretches everyday (along with a pure diet, stretching is a great way to begin to take care of your body if you’re overweight);
    • Healthy food and water as mentioned above, as well as eliminate or limit drugs, including alcohol and pharmaceuticals;
    • If you must smoke, smoke less and switch to organic tobacco;
    • Declutter and deep clean home, car, office etc.; and
    • Use non-toxic beauty and hygiene products.
  • Psychological/Emotional Health
    • Meditate for at least 10 minutes every morning and/or evening (here is an article to get you started and here is one describing dozens of scientifically proven health benefits);
    • Healthy food and water as mentioned above;
    • Consume independent, propaganda-free information and decrease social media interaction;
    • Face and aim to overcome your hypocrisies and traumas, arrange your mind coherently through mindfulness and self-administered psychotherapy, clear your emotional and psychological baggage (let shit go), heal hurts, practice forgiveness, expand consciousness in general through learning greater and more powerful truths; and
    • Create and maintain boundaries on friends and family members who treat you poorly or drain you emotionally and energetically.
  • Philosophical Health (Philo = love of and Sophia = wisdom)
    • Identify and transform your false beliefs (try to start as fresh as you can to really dig out the lies fictions that we’ve carry since our childhood);
    • Organise your philosophies (which we all have) into a coherent and consistent framework;
    • Develop a grand vision of your existence which will create a stronger force field against life’s challenges and woes;
    • Evolve and embody your cosmology;
    • Invest time in transforming knowledge (information) into wisdom (action and behaviour); and
    • Discover new ideas and concepts and learn new ways to perceive and conceive life.
  • Sexual Health
    • Ensure healthier self-pleasure practices, such as masturbating less if you do it too much or do it more if you don’t do it enough;
    • Be more present with your partner when having sex, develop greater sexual communication including with fantasies, explore their body more, try new positions, set up sexual temple including burning candles, create more time and space for each other;
    • Develop tantra techniques and be more present in your body;
    • Ensure your fantasies are healthy; and
    • Equally value giving and receiving, or according to the dynamics of your relationship.
  • Creational Health
    • Be more inventive, try out new hobbies, develop new interests, evolve hobby health;
    • Paint, draw, build, cook, grow food and practice any other form of art;
    • Explore more of your local areas; and
    • Practice daily, weekly and monthly rituals.
  • Recreational Health
    • Increase time doing healthy leisure activities.
  • Social Health
    • Be around your friends and family in healthy and productive settings;
    • Identify the roles and characters that you play that are not really you, so you can be who you need and want to be, instead of who society or your peers expect you to be;
    • Mix with groups that are respectful to others and avoid those which have a herd mentality that inflict verbal, emotional or physical harm onto others;
    • Get involved with local groups that aim to help your community; and
    • Meet new people and explore new ways to socialise.
  • Spiritual Health
    • Spirituality can be viewed as simply honouring our intimate interconnection with life, regardless if we perceive it through ecological, quantum physical and/or metaphysical lenses;
    • Respect the sovereignty of your spirit, dance with the mystery of existence, have awe for the many things we are yet to understand, connect with the self and all its’ layers;
    • Investigate true astrology, numerology, sacred geometry;
    • Connect with life in general (plant, animal, cosmic and metaphysical intelligence and essence);
    • Practice enchantment, recognise your spirit quests, get out in nature more, apply reverence to your experience, be more grateful; and
    • Keep a dream journal, meditate, generate out-of-body experiences, alter your states of consciousness through meditation and mindfulness.

4. Be Mindful of World-Care

Most of us want to leave behind a world that is better than when we found it so that our future generations can benefit from that legacy. However, in this day and age the human population is divided more than ever, where fighting each other is more prevalent than collectively focusing on our commonalities, such as the poor design of our social system.

This does more harm than good, especially when the populace is increasingly hateful towards each other.

Whether it’s politics, science, entertainment or even spirituality, the herd mentality has fragmented the masses. As a result, many of the core issues of our current age seldom get attention by a good number of people. In addition, many people only focus on the injustices that are symptomatic to them, instead of also focusing on the root cause.

Therefore, when we become more mindful of our world-care, we must take a grand, objective view of the way our social system is designed so that our associated action can have the greatest effectiveness. Furthermore, given the hatred and abuse online and at partisan political events, we would all benefit by caring for and respecting people more, debating maturely and aiming to find common ground with one another.

Ideas and Ideals:

  • Educate ourselves on the fundamental societal issues, as well as the potential solutions [Hint: the 4M’s are a good place to start, which are Management (poor government design and education failings), Media (propaganda issues and controlled outlets), Medicine (toxic drugs and unhealthy food supply) and Money (the supply is non-sovereign and money creation should be exclusive for community banks, not private banks)];
  • Have greater focus on the issues with the design of the social system, not just its symptoms;
  • Treat others with respect, even those you disagree with (unless they’re causing harm of course);
  • Be properly educated if you engage in debates and do so in mature ways;
  • Ensure you’re not parroting propaganda and lies;
  • Do no harm, unless in self-defence (the golden rule);
  • Objectively examine alternative opinions and perspectives to learn more, and then change your beliefs according to new insights into what is the reality of our reality;
  • Behave in ways that recognise that we’ll never agree with all the beliefs of other people, but that we do have some common ground too, such as that we all want safety, happiness and wellness for ourselves and our loved ones;
  • Behave in ways which encourage unification with your fellow man, not division;
  • Get involved with local, national and international initiatives that genuinely aim to help move humanity in more honourable and just directions;
  • Buy local where possible, shop in independent stores to avoid the multinational chains, examine the institutions you support with your money to determine if their ethics align with yours, bank with community-owned institutions;
  • Smile and engage with people daily, introduce yourself to the people that you deal with on a weekly basis (shop keepers, people that you pass at work/on public transport), join a community group or class, visit and help out at your community garden, volunteer if you have the time, check in on your neighbours (especially the elderly);
  • Adjust your footprint on the environment, such as household waste, composting, growing your own food, buying in bulk, reuse before recycle, avoid buying food in plastic, take your own shopping bags, make your own cleaning and beauty products, try not to buy anything new all month and source second hand items and clothing, donate/swap/sell items that you no longer use, be a weirdo and pick up other peoples trash when you are in nature;
  • Learn about and practice permaculture, regardless to what degree you can; and
  • Be part of the solutions, not the problems.
Final Thoughts

If you read to the end, well done, I appreciate your commitment. I hope you put even more commitment into yourself and your world for not just ‘Flawless August’, but your entire life too.

After all, you deserve it.

A way to get you determined and excited is by looking forward to how good you will be thinking, feeling and behaving after just a week, and then two, especially after consuming quality food, water and information.

To get started, put aside an entire day to get the resources you need for the week, so that you’re prepared. Research new recipes, new honourable news outlets, and new hobbies. And tell your friends and family so they can check in on your progress.

If you’re reading this after August has already begun, try doing it for a week or two anyway. For anyone who tests it out, take note of how easy it is in some ways and challenging in others. I’m sure people in more urbanised environments, for example, will find greater difficulty in sourcing quality food and water, however I’m near certain it’s not impossible.

According to the American Cancer Society,1 liver cancer affects an estimated 41,000 Americans each year, and prevalence is rising.2 Between 2000 and 2016, the annual death toll from liver cancer rose by 43 percent for men and 40 percent for women,3 killing more than 11,000 people in 2016.4 The five-year survival rate for localized liver cancer is 31 percent, while regional cancer that has spread to other organs and distant liver cancer have survival rates of just 11 percent and 3 percent respectively.

Globally, the liver cancer hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the second leading cause of cancer death due to the high prevalence and difficulty of treatment. Researchers warn that by 2030, the global rate of liver cancer will double, affecting upward of 1.2 million.5

Other liver-related diseases such as cirrhosis and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are also becoming more prevalent. Between 2001 and 2013, the number of diagnosed cirrhosis cases nearly doubled,6 and deaths from cirrhosis increased by 65 percent between 1999 and 2016.7 The greatest increase (10.5 percent) was among those between the ages of 25 and 34, where alcoholic cirrhosis has become rampant.8,9

Excess Alcohol Consumption Is Driving Rising Rates of Liver Damage

According to researchers, the rise in cirrhosis mortality is entirely driven by excess alcohol consumption by young adults. While, historically, alcohol-related liver cirrhosis has been regarded as a condition that develops after two or three decades of heavy drinking, these newer statistics reveal it doesn’t have to take that long at all, as it’s now occurring in (and killing) 20- and 30-year-olds.

In the 25 to 34 age group, death from alcohol-related liver disease nearly tripled between 1999 and 2016. This increase parallels statistics10 showing a rise in binge drinking between 2002 and 2012. It also correlates with the global financial crisis in 2008, after which more people began dying from cirrhosis. Researchers believe financial worries and unemployment may have been significant contributing factors, causing more people to drink more heavily.

Cirrhosis (irreversible scarring of your liver) can also be caused by obesity, NAFLD and hepatitis, and can in turn lead to fatal liver failure and/or liver cancer. Men are particularly at risk, in large part because they’re five times more likely to develop NAFLD than women.

Lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, weight, smoking and alcohol consumption also play important roles in exacerbating (as well as reducing) your chances of developing some form of liver disease. People at increased risk also include those who have an autoimmune disease, chronic liver inflammation, and those whose livers have been damaged due to bouts of hepatitis B or C. The good news is that alcohol-related liver cirrhosis can be reversed if caught early enough — and provided you quit drinking.

Excess Sugar Consumption Drives Rising NAFLD Rates

While alcohol-related cirrhosis is driving up mortality rates, rising prevalence of NAFLD is contributing to the overall burden of liver-related diseases. In the case of NAFLD, the fatty liver occurs in the absence of significant alcohol consumption, and is driven instead by excess sugar, which is why this condition is now found even in young children.

NAFLD often has no symptoms, although it may cause fatigue, jaundice, swelling in the legs and abdomen, mental confusion and more. If left untreated, it can cause your liver to swell, called nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and can lead to liver cancer or liver failure. As with alcohol-related cirrhosis, however, NAFLD can be reversed in its early stages by eating right and exercising.

Most importantly, you need to eliminate processed fructose and other added sugars from your diet. Fructose actually affects your liver in ways that are very similar to alcohol. Unlike glucose, which can be used by virtually every cell in your body, fructose can only be metabolized by your liver, as your liver is the only organ that has the transporter for it.

Since all fructose gets shuttled to your liver, if you consume high amounts of it, fructose ends up taxing and damaging your liver in the same way alcohol and other toxins do. The way your liver metabolizes fructose is also very similar to that of alcohol,11 as both serve as substrates for converting carbohydrates into fat, which promotes insulin resistance, dyslipidemia (abnormal fat levels in the bloodstream) and fatty liver.

Fructose also undergoes the Maillard reaction with proteins, leading to the formation of superoxide free radicals that can result in liver inflammation similar to acetaldehyde, an intermediary metabolite of ethanol. According to Dr. Robert Lustig, a neuroendocrinologist in the division of endocrinology at the University of California, fructose is a “chronic, dose-dependent liver toxin.”

Excess Glucose is Converted to Fructose and Decimates Your NAD+

I recently read an excellent review12 on NAD that helped me understand the basic biochemistry far better, and it makes perfect sense. It is not only eating excess fructose in processed foods that is the problem, but excess glucose is ultimately converted to fructose by your body in an effort to metabolize glucose for energy. Let me explain it to you.

When your body is exposed to chronic glucose excess, the first enzyme in breaking down glucose is hexokinase, and this enzyme becomes saturated and can’t break down any more glucose. Once this occurs, glucose will then be metabolized through the polyol pathway, in which glucose is metabolized to sorbitol by aldose reductase, and sorbitol is subsequently metabolized to fructose by sorbitol dehydrogenase (see figure below).

It is estimated when you are healthy, only about 3 percent of glucose goes through the pathway below, but at least 30 percent of glucose flows through this pathway in chronic hyperglycemia,13 creating a vicious cycle of excess fructose.

This metabolic catastrophe is the net redox result of the trading of one molecule of NADPH for one molecule of NADH. This is precisely what you don’t want to happen, as NADPH is used as a reductive reservoir for your antioxidants and is necessary to make your steroid hormones and fats. When you have low levels you are in deep trouble.

Complicating it further, you increase NADH and worsen your NAD+/NADH ratio. As fuel supply outstrips metabolic demand, mitochondrial and cytoplasmic NAD/NADH ratios fall. The ensuing mitochondrial membrane hyperpolarization perpetuates electron leakage and excessive oxidative stress.

Fortunately, the good news is that there is a simple inexpensive solution that should radically improve this metabolic catastrophe. The first, of course, is to clean up your diet as we have previously discussed many times, so your body can burn fat for fuel. But you can also take NAD precursors like simple nontimed-release niacin.

That should help increase the NAD+/NADH ratio and NADPH levels. As noted in one recent paper,14 “Oral administration of nicotinamide riboside, a natural NAD+ precursor, completely corrected these NAFLD phenotypes induced by NAD+ deficiency.”

I would start nontimed release niacin at 25 to 50 milligrams a few times a day, as any dose higher will likely cause a harmless but relatively annoying flushing sensation. It would also be helpful to reduce your exposure to electromagnetic fields, as that also consumes NAD+ through PARP hyperactivation and will worsen the metabolic condition.

Low-Level Chemical Exposures Linked to Liver Damage

While there’s no data on this, it’s possible that alcohol-induced cirrhosis is now occurring sooner as a result of liver damage caused by chemical exposures. Researchers have shown that even small amounts of chemicals from food, pharmaceuticals and personal care products can in fact cause liver damage. One such experiment15 was designed to evaluate the effects of chemical combinations at low doses from environmental sources such as food, pharmaceuticals and personal care products.16

Using four groups of Sprague-Dawley rats, the researchers administered a mix of chemicals found in everyday products in their drinking water at varying doses for a period of six months. The control group received chemical-free water.

Of the three treatment groups, the low-dose group received 25 percent of the European Union (EU) acceptable daily intake for the chemicals in question, the medium dose group received exactly the acceptable daily intake defined by the EU, while the high-dose group received five times the acceptable daily intake.17

After six months, body weight and biochemistry markers were evaluated, revealing the animal’s weight increased more than 10 percent in all male groups, compared to controls.18 Modest increases were found in females given medium and high doses of the chemicals.

They also discovered adverse liver effects — especially at the low-dose level and primarily in the males. Overall, the results suggest exposure to low doses may induce liver damage as a result of the combination of different toxic mechanisms, and supports previous research showing that chemical cocktails, even at low levels,19 can damage liver function20 and trigger cancer.21

Roundup Damages Liver at Ultra-Low Doses

Roundup, the most heavily-used weed killer in the world, has also been linked to liver damage. Disturbingly, urine levels of glyphosate have skyrocketed in the past couple of decades, suggesting widespread, chronic exposure, most likely from food. Between 1993 and 2016, levels of the chemical in human urine increased 1,200 percent.22 Recent food testing also reveals that most foods sold in the U.S. are contaminated with glyphosate.

This is of significant concern, as research suggests Roundup can cause significant liver damage even at ultralow doses. The study,23 published in the journal Scientific Reports, looked at the effects of glyphosate exposures of 4 nanograms per kilogram of body weight per day, which is 75,000 and 437,500 times below EU and U.S. permitted levels, respectively.

After a two-year period, female rats showed signs of liver damage, specifically NAFLD and progression to nonalcoholic steatohepatosis (NASH). Study author Michael Antoniou, Ph.D., told Sustainable Pulse:24

“The findings of our study are very worrying as they demonstrate for the first time a causative link between an environmentally relevant level of Roundup consumption over the long-term and a serious disease — namely nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Our results also suggest that regulators should reconsider the safety evaluation of glyphosate-based herbicides.”

Milk Thistle Helps Prevent Liver Damage

Milk thistle is an herb that has been used for thousands of years to support liver, kidney and gallbladder health. In modern times, silymarin has been used to treat alcoholic liver disease, acute and chronic viral hepatitis and toxin-induced liver diseases.

The active ingredient, a flavonoid called silymarin, is thought to be responsible for the beneficial effects attributed to milk thistle, including liver protection, antioxidant, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. In your liver, silymarin works as an antifibrotic, thereby preventing tissue scarring, and blocks toxins by inhibiting the binding of toxins to liver cell membrane receptors. Silymarin also protects your liver and promotes healthy liver function by:

  • Suppressing cellular inflammation25
  • Inhibiting the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), a pathway that, when overactivated, increases your risk of cancer26
  • Activating AMPK (activated AMP-activated protein kinase),27 an enzyme inside your cells. AMPK is sometimes referred to as a “metabolic master switch,” as it plays an important role in regulating metabolism and energy homeostasis.28 AMPK produces many of the same benefits as you would get from exercise and weight loss, both of which benefit your liver health
  • Reducing liver injury caused by a number of drugs and environmental toxins, including acetaminophen, chemotherapy, psychotropic drugs and alcohol
  • Increasing glutathione, a powerful antioxidant that plays a role in the detoxification of heavy metals and other harmful substances
N-acetylcysteine Supplement Supports Your Liver Health

Another powerful liver protectant is N-acetylcysteine (NAC), a precursor needed for glutathione biosynthesis. In fact, research suggests NAC may be a better alternative for supporting liver health in those with hepatitis C and other chronic liver diseases than the antioxidant resveratrol.29

Alcohol and acetaminophen are two common compounds metabolized through the liver that are associated with liver damage. NAC supplementation has been effective in minimizing damage associated with alcohol consumption when taken prior to alcohol ingestion.30 NAC is also used as an antidote for acetaminophen toxicity, which causes liver damage by depleting glutathione.31 Research published in Hepatitis Monthly32 has also shown NAC supplementation helps improve liver function in patients with NASH.

Folate Deficiency Worsens Severity of NASH

Increasing your intake of folate can also help protect your liver function. In a study33 involving 83 patients with NASH, researchers found levels of folate and vitamin B12 were inversely related to the development of fibrosis or the formation of scar tissue. Past research has identified an association between low levels of vitamins and chronic liver disease, but this is the first to find an association between folate and vitamin B12 level to NASH severity.

Studies have also shown folate deficiency can increase your risk for liver cancer.34,35 In one, which involved hepatitis B-positive patients (who are at higher risk for liver damage), higher folate levels were associated with a 67 percent lower risk of liver cancer.36

According to the authors, increased folate in humans appear to be inversely associated with the development of liver damage and hepatocarcinoma, and that folate can offer the liver some degree of protection against damage. Folate may also mitigate against pesticide-related damage, including autism.

Your body stores approximately 10 to 30 milligrams of folate at a time, nearly 50 percent of which is in your liver. Folate is the natural form of vitamin B9 found in foods and once referred to as folacin. The word was derived from the Latin “folium,” meaning leaf. Green leafy vegetables such as spinach are abundant sources of folate, as are asparagus, broccoli, Brussels sprouts and avocados.37 Broccoli is perhaps ideal, as research38 has confirmed it helps protect against NAFLD.

Avoid folic acid supplements however. While readily absorbed, this synthetic form is not converted in the intestines like folate is. Instead, it is converted in your liver. This means folic acid can reach saturation quicker, which may result in overexposure if you’re taking supplements.

Coffee May Cut Risk of Liver Cancer

Last but not least, if you’re a coffee drinker, you may be relieved to find out that coffee appears to have a protective effect against HCC, a serious form of liver cancer and the second-most prevalent cause of death from cancer in the world. Drinking a single cup of coffee every day cuts your risk of HCC by one-fifth.39,40

If you drink more than that in a day, your risk for liver cancer is even lower. Two cups of coffee a day cut the risk by 35 percent, and five cups cut the risk in half. That said, excessive coffee consumption can have other adverse effects. As noted by lead author Dr. Oliver Kennedy from the U.K.’s University of Southampton:41

“We’re not suggesting that everyone should start drinking five cups of coffee a day though. There needs to be more investigation into the potential harms of high coffee-caffeine intake, and there is evidence it should be avoided in certain groups, such as pregnant women.”

To optimize your health benefits from coffee, make sure it’s organic, and drink it black, without milk or sugar. A far better alternative would be “bulletproof coffee,” where you add butter or MCT oil to the coffee instead of sweeteners.
